Roland De Wolfe Completes Poker Triple Crown, Wins Omaha High-Low WSOP Bracelet
By virtue of taking down a $5,000 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha High-Low Split Eight or Better bracelet during the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Roland De Wolfe became only the second player ever to complete poker’s Triple Crown. De Wolfe also has wins on the European Poker Tour (EPT) and World Poker Tour (WPT).
He joins Gavin Griffin as the only players to have accomplished the feat. In 2005, De Wolfe won the WPT Grand Prix de Paris for €479,680, defeating Juha Helppi heads-up in a final table that also included Alan Goehring. In late 2006, De Wolfe emerged as the champion of EPT Dublin for €554,300 after navigating through a 389 player field. His win on Sunday in the Amazon Room was worth $246,616. The new Triple Crown winner told WSOP officials after the tournament had concluded that it was the third Pot Limit Omaha High-Low event he had ever played. He noted, “I got lots of advice from some English players. But when it comes to experience in this game, I was clearly in the bottom half of the field. But, I’m a card player. I have good card sense. I can play any game.”
Antony Lellouche was the first casualty of the nine-handed final table. After a flop of 10-8-6, Lellouche called all-in for his tournament life holding A-Q-10-2 for a pair of tens. Two-time Omaha bracelet winner Scott “BigRiskky” Clements showed A-9-7-2 for the nut straight. The turn came a 10, improving Lellouche to trips, but the river was a jack. Lellouche earned $29,965 for his ninth place effort. Armando Ruiz was the next to go, falling with A-Q-3-2 (all hearts) against Brett Richey’s A-A-9-7. Ruiz pocketed $32,105 for his troubles.
John Racener hit the skids in seventh place after pushing on a board of 10-4-2-9 with two clubs and two hearts. Racener flipped up A-3-9-8 with two clubs for flush and straight draws, while Robert Campbell showed A-7-3-2 with two hearts. A three of hearts on the river gave Campbell a flush for the high and a better low, sending Racener home $36,200 richer. Andy Black hit the rails 10 minutes later holding A-A-4-3 against Campbell’s A-A-5-4. Campbell hit a spade flush on the river to secure Black’s exit and $42,993 payday. Black finished fifth in the 2005 WSOP Main Event, which was ultimately won by Team PokerStars Pro member Joe Hachem.
Alex Kravchenko was eliminated in fifth place for $53,881. He was all-in pre-flop against Clements holding 8-7-5-4 with two clubs and two spades. Clements showed A-9-7-5 with two spades and two hearts. The board came J-10-5-K-6 with no flush possibilities and Clements’ pair of fives scooped the pot. De Wolfe then sent Campbell home after calling Campbell’s all-in on a board of 7-5-3-4. Campbell flipped over A-A-K-8, while De Wolfe showed A-9-7-6. An eight on the river preserved De Wolfe’s win with a straight and qualifying low.
Clements hit the rails in third place for $101,063 in his second final table of the 2009 WSOP. Clements was all-in against De Wolfe holding A-A-6-4 against De Wolfe’s A-9-8-3 with two clubs on a board of 9-7-2 (also with two clubs). The turn fell a five and the river was the king of clubs, giving De Wolfe a straight; he also scooped the low. Heads-up play between De Wolfe and Richey ended when the latter was all-in with Q-J-10-9 on a board of 10-8-4. De Wolfe held A-Q-8-4 for two pair. A deuce on the turn didn’t change matters and a river ace improved De Wolfe to aces-up. Richey pocketed $152,618 as a consolation prize, while De Wolfe banked $246,616.
Here were the final results from the $5,000 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha High-Low Split Eight or Better event:
1. Roland De Wolfe - $246,616
2. Brett Richey - $152,618
3. Scott Clements - $101,063
4. Robert Campbell - $72,121
5. Alexander Kravchenko - $53,881
6. Andrew Black - $42,993
7. John Racener - $36,200
8. Armando Ruiz - $32,105
9. Anthony Lellouche - $29,965

PartyPoker Hosts Women’s World Open III
Several of the world’s top female poker pros will take to the felts this Sunday at Three Mills Studios in London, the site of the third PartyPoker Women’s World Open. Three days later, the $3,000 buy-in tournament will crown a champion, who will see her bank account grow by $50,000.
A total of 36 entrants are set to hit the felts, including Betfair pro Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad, the champion of the inaugural World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe Main Event in 2007. The youngster battled through a 362 player field two years ago and defeated fellow Betfair pro John “kunku wap” Tabatabai heads-up. Her first place finish was worth £1 million and a coveted gold bracelet. Online, she has multiple wins in the challenging PokerStars $100 rebuy and allegedly won a $4 buy-in 180-man sit and go on PokerStars while only looking at her cards once.
Obrestad will battle against another bracelet winner in the Women’s World Open field, actress Jennifer Tilly. She stormed through the field in the $1,000 buy-in Ladies Event held during the 2005 WSOP, winning $158,000 for her efforts. In the tournament, Tilly dueled against Anh Le heads-up, who has finished as the runner up in the WSOP Ladies tournament in two of the past four years. Sandra Naujoks, who took down the European Poker Tour’s (EPT) Dortmund stop for $1.2 million, will also take a seat at the Women’s World Open. In the German EPT event, Naujoks bested Holger Kanisch heads-up.
The last running of the Women’s World Open was won by Soraya Homam, who is expected to be in the field this weekend trying to repeat. Stefanie Bergener, May Maceiras, and Eliza Burnett, all of whom reached the final table when the second Women’s World Open played out in October, will return to vie for the title once again. The tournament is played as a six-handed shootout, with each of the winners moving onto the final table. The second place finishers in each heat will then battle for the seventh and final spot at the feature table. Jessie May and Obrestad will provide play-by-play and the tournament can be seen on Five in the United Kingdom later this year. Then, it will be rolled out to a worldwide audience.
The inaugural Women’s World Open took place in August of 2007 in London. In the end, Beverly Pace took home the $50,000 first place prize, defeating Jen Mason heads-up. Also at the final table was Kara Scott, whom ESPN poker commentator Norman Chad ogled over during the broadcast of the 2008 WSOP Main Event. Scott took 104th in that tournament, cashing for $41,000. She finished as the runner up in the Irish Open in Dublin last month, pocketing $413,000 in an event won by 2003 World Poker Tour (WPT) Euro Finals of Poker victor Christer Johansson.
PartyPoker’s VIP club, dubbed the Palladium Lounge, sent four qualifiers to the Women’s World Open this weekend. On some of the highlights from the six preliminary heats, a statement from PartyPoker read, “There are certainly some interesting heats lined-up. The opening heat features Annette and Germany’s Christine Klecz, while the second in the afternoon features both Jennifer Tilly and Jen Mason. Heat Five on Wednesday looks to be one of the toughest on paper, however, as it features May Maceiras, who seriously impressed last year with her hyper-aggressive game, as well as Maria Demetriou and Sandra Naujoks.”
Other top female gamers who will head to London include Lynne Beaumont, Maria Demetriou, Jen Mason, Veronique Gordon, Liv Boeree, Cecilia Nordenstram, Kim Wooka, Lise Vigezzi, Colette Murphy, and Agnieska Rylik. Here is a look at how the $108,000 prize pool is divided, with the top six players finishing in the money:
1st Place: $50,000
2nd Place: $22,000
3rd Place: $14,000
4th Place: $10,000
5th Place: $7,000
6th Place: $5,000

Hungary’s Peter Traply Leads EPT Monte Carlo with 14 Players Remaining
A record-breaking 935 players made the trek to Monaco for the European Poker Tour’s (EPT) Monte Carlo Grand Final, which began last week. Now, the field has been trimmed to just 14, with Hungarian poker player Peter Traply leading the pack.
The Monte Carlo Grand Final in the luxurious city marks the conclusion of the fifth EPT season. Last year in this event, Traply finished in 26th place and banked €42,000 from the €10,000 buy-in tournament. At the time of writing, the Hungarian sits with a commanding chip lead over the rest of the field. In fact, he is the only player with over four million chips. The next closest combatant, Russian poker player Mikhail Tulchinskiy, has 3.2 million.
Holding the fifth largest stack in the EPT finale with 14 players to go is Dag Martin Mikkelsen, who hails from Norway. He made a deep run in the 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in Las Vegas, banking $237,000 for his efforts. Mikkelsen finished fourth in the EPT’s Barcelona stop during Season 4 for $27,000. Also in the hunt and representing Norway is Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad, the winner of the 2007 WSOP Europe Main Event. In that tournament, she won $2 million and became the youngest bracelet winner ever. During the EPT Dublin stop during Season 4, Obrestad finished as the runner up, banking another $416,000 for her efforts. Obrestad will turn 21 years old in September and consequently will not be able to compete in the 2009 WSOP festivities, which kick off on May 27th from the Rio.
Here are the chip counts as they stand with 14 players remaining, according to numbers reported by PokerStars. Blinds are 30,000-60,000 with an ante of 5,000:
1. Peter Traply (Hungary) – 4,175,000

13. Grayson Physioc (United States) – 1,125,000
14. Johannes Strassmann (Germany) – 520,000
Naalden has four WSOP cashes to his name for over $100,000 in total and took third in the Season 2 EPT Copenhagen event for $116,000. Woodward finished 95th in the 2006 WSOP Main Event, which was ultimately won by Jamie Gold. Rossiter grabbed 20th in the EPT German Open in 2008 for $25,000. Strassmann, who sits as the tournament’s short stack, has made three EPT final table appearances, recording two sixth place finishes during Season 4 events in San Remo and Dortmound for a combined payday of $300,000.
A total of 88 players finished in the money. Among those who took home cash from the prestigious EPT tournament were:
19th Place: Jason “Taknapotin” Somerville (United States) - $67,000
31st Place: “Miami” John Cernuto (United States) - $58,500
33rd Place: Sebastian Ruthenberg (Germany) - $52,000
38th Place: Alexander Kravchenko (Russia) - $52,000

76th Place: Andreas Hoivold (Norway) - $28,600
The tournament will crown a winner on Sunday. Last year’s champion, Glen Chorny, barreled through a field of 842 players en route to a $3.1 million payday. Heads-up, Chorny defeated Hungarian poker player Denes Kalo, with American Isaac “westmenloAA” Baron taking fourth for $901,000. Also at the final table were Antonio Esfandiari and Luca Pagano. First place this year will take home €2.3 million, also the equivalent of $3.1 million at current exchange rates.

PKR Announces Pro Team
Joining the likes of the other major online poker rooms, next generation poker site PKR.com today announced the roster of its new “Team PKR Pro.” The six new members will represent PKR.com and act as brand ambassadors for the website.
“Team PKR Pro” will be exclusively sponsored by PKR and act as brand representatives at live events, as well as offering a variety of content for the PKR.com website and PKR TV. They will also be available to play on the PKR.com site in both cash games and specially organized bounty tournaments.
The inaugural members of the team include TV celebrity Ashley Hames (ashleyhames1), GUKPT winner Andrew Teng (PKR username “golfpro699”) and 2008 Irish Open finalist Kai Danilo Paulsen (kingkai84), along with PKR community members Raymond O’Mahoney (callmebabe), James Sudworth (James666) and PKR Live runner-up Henrik Eklund (pokey85).
“We’ve been following our initial ‘Team PKR Pro’ members for some time and are convinced that they all have the game and personality required to be genuinely world class poker players”, said PKR Marketing Director Simon Prodger. “They are also among the most recognized and respected players within the PKR community so are guaranteed to have over two and a half million people cheering them on every time they play.”
Here’s a closer look at each of the new members of “Team PKR Pro”:
Henrik “Pokey85” Eklund (Stockholm, Sweden) -- Eklund, 24, has been playing poker for four years. The Swede has been a regular at PKR’s nosebleed cash game tables since April 2007 and began to make a name for himself on the live tournament scene by taking second place at the inaugural PKR Live in November 2008 followed by a victory in the APT Manila Headhunter side event. Henrik’s ambition for 2009 (beyond winning the WSOP) is to make a final table of a major event.
Ashley “ashleyhames1” Hames (London, UK) -- Ashley Hames is a popular TV presenter and writer who is known for his series Sin Cities -- still Bravo’s highest rating show ever in the UK. Hames is also the PKR TV commentator. He began playing poker in 2008 and rates his poker highs as playing in the WSOP main event, reaching the final of Celebrity Poker Club and playing on the TV table at this year’s Irish Open.
Raymond “callmebabe” O’Mahoney (Dublin, Republic of Ireland) -- Like Eklund, O’Mahoney has been cutting his teeth at the highest cash games and tournaments since April 2007. His first major live cash came courtesy of the inaugural PKR Live $500 Main Event, where he finished fourth for $6,500. Ray’s goal is to win his home major, the Irish Open.
Kai “KingKai” Paulsen (Trondheim, Norway) -- The 25-year-old Norwegian has the finest live tournament record of any PKR regular with more than $322,000 in earnings. This includes two cashes at the WSOP (including an 18th place finish in Event #49 in 2007) and a fifth place finish at the 2008 Irish Open, where he earned $229,358. Kai’s aspirations include winning one of poker’s majors -- and preferably bring home a bracelet.
James “James666” Sudworth (Kent, UK) -- This 22 year old has been a familiar face at the PKR tables since November of 2006, playing some of the biggest cash games the site has to offer. Sudworth’s top poker accomplishment was a runner-up finish at the GUKPT in January 2009 for more than £40,000.
Andrew “golfpro699” Teng (London, UK) -- Teng has been a high-stakes pro across many online sites for the past two years. He made an impact on the live scene in 2008, first making a deep run in the WSOP Main Event (126th place) and then winning the Thanet leg of the GUKPT in October 2008 for £70,000.
PRK, founded in 2005, is an innovative online poker site that features real-time video game-like 3D graphics that has changed the way online poker is played.

Christer Johansson Wins Irish Open 2009
Christer Johansson Captures 2009 Irish Open Championship
After three grueling days of battle through the second largest field in the history of the event, Sweden’s Christer Johansson defeated poker announcer and player Kara Scott to win the 2009 PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open on Monday evening.
The PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open, held this year at the City West Hotel in Dublin, is the longest running tournament on the European continent, with its inaugural event having played out in 1980, and is second only to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in longevity. This year’s event brought in 700 of the top poker players in the world, which made for the second largest field in the history of the tournament (2007 saw 706 runners come to the line).
Among those who entered the event was its defending champion, England’s Neil “Bad Beat” Channing, who was joined by former WSOP Main Event winners Dan Harrington and Jamie Gold. Noted cash game player Brian “sbrugby” Townsend represented the online world. Several Irishmen, including WSOP bracelet holder Ciaran O’Leary and “Mad” Marty Smyth, vied to bring the title back to the Emerald Isle. On the first day of play, however, it was an American who made the most noise.
Day One saw professional Phil “The Unabomber” Laak streak to the Top Ten of the leader board, but he had significant competition. Joining Phil among the leaders was European professional Julian Thew, but neither would be around when the final table started on Monday. The Day One leader, Bradley Verburg, and Andrew Pantling would make the final table after bursting out of the gates well, with Pantling holding the lead as final table play began:
Seat 1: Lee Brooke-Pearce — 998,000 chips
Seat 2: Andrew Pantling — 2,286,000 chips
Seat 3: Andrew Bradshaw — 351,000 chips
Seat 4: Kara Scott — 701,000 chips
Seat 5: William Kassouf — 569,000 chips
Seat 6: Bradley Verburg — 217,000 chips
Seat 7: Christer Johansson — 906,000 chips
Seat 8: Atanas Gueorguiev — 990,000 chips
With a plethora of chips among the players, it was expected that the final table would be a drawn-out affair. This wasn’t meant to be, however, as Bradshaw was eliminated in eighth place on the second hand when his A-Q couldn’t top Gueorguiev’s pocket Kings. Pantling eliminated Verburg in seventh a few hands later and, when Scott moved all-in and wasn’t called, there were three different all-in situations in the first ten hands of action.
Both Pantling and Gueorguiev continued to apply pressure to the final table, with Gueorguiev eliminating Kassouf in sixth and Pantling dispatching Brooke-Pearce in fifth. With four players remaining, the chips were evenly spread out and the action calmed down. With play subsiding, both Scott and Johansson began to climb up the leader board.
It took approximately an hour and a half before another member of the final table would be dismissed. After raising the pre-flop pot, Gueorguiev found himself re-raised by Pantling. Scott, who held a slight chip lead on the table, promptly moved a 500,000 chip bet to the center. Gueorguiev immediately popped the remainder of his stack into the pot and, after Pantling folded, faced the call from Scott. Gueorguiev’s pocket Kings were ahead of Scott’s A-Q, but a cruel Ace on the river stole the hand from Atanas and eliminated him in fourth place.
After administering the bad beat, Scott held nearly two-thirds of the chips in play. Known for her poker announcing across the European continent, Scott was attempting to become the fifth woman to win the Irish Open poker crown. After Johansson eliminated Pantling to reach heads-up play when he rivered a Queen against Pantling’s pocket sevens, Scott still held the chip lead, albeit by only 400,000 chips.
It only took 13 hands to determine a champion. Johansson, who had been steady throughout play at the final table, gradually began to impose his will against Scott until he built a solid lead. On the final hand, Scott raised the stakes to 140,000 and was flat-called by Johansson. After a J-7-K flop, the remainder of Scott’s chips found their way into the middle and Johansson called. When the cards were turned up, Johansson held the lead with K-3 for top pair against Scott’s J-9 for second pair. No saving card came on the turn or river and Johansson captured the 2009 Irish Open.
With the championship, Johansson, who previously had won a major title on the World Poker Tour at the inaugural Grand Prix de Paris, surpassed the $2 million mark in career earnings. Scott, who finished 104th last year in the WSOP Main Event, took home her best finish ever in a tournament and showed that her poker skills are just as prominent as her announcing duties.
The final table paid out as follows:
1st Place: Christer Johansson - €600,000
2nd Place: Kara Scott - €312,600
3rd Place: Andrew Pantling - €205,200
4th Place: Atanas Gueorguiev - €163,300
5th Place: Lee Brooke-Pearce - €130,600
6th Place: William Kassouf - €100,800
7th Place: Bradley Verburg - €74,600
8th Place: Andy Bradshaw - €56,000
