CardRunners Offers a Chance to Win a Piece of Taylor Caby
Those looking for a good sweat or just looking for a little extra cash before the holidays may want to investigate a new promotion from the online poker training site CardRunners. The site recently launched a promotion in tandem with TrulyFreePokerTraining.com in which one lucky person has a chance to win as much as $5,000 courtesy of CardRunners co-founder and instructor Taylor “Green Plastic” Caby.
The promotion, called Piece of Taylor, offers the chance to win a 1% stake in Caby when he participates in the final table of the televised invitational tournament, the Full Tilt Poker Million. Caby is one of the six players in the 72-person field to advance through the preliminary and semi-final heats of the shootout style event to secure a spot at the final table. He will be joined in the finals by recent ninth place finisher in this year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event James Akenhead, online poker pro Luke “FullFlush1″ Schwartz, Dag Martin Mikkelsen, Juha Helppi, and online qualifier Peter Vasiliou. A seventh player, an online qualifier from Full Tilt Poker, will also be added to the lineup. The final table is scheduled to play out in London on December 3rd, with action airing live on the Sky Sports network in Europe.
Caby and the others will be battling for the top prize of $500,000, but each will walk away with a minimum payout of $50,000. That means that those who take part in the Piece of Taylor promotion will win anywhere from $500 to $5,000 depending on where Caby ends up finishing. In order to participate in the promotion, players must register with TrulyFreePokerTraining.com, a site that allows players to take advantage of both CardRunners and StoxPoker just by earning points on Full Tilt Poker. To be eligible for the Piece of Taylor promotion, users must sign up before December 3rd. A random drawing will be held on December 7th to determine a winner.
There is no cost to enroll with TrulyFreePokerTraining.com, which credits users with subscriptions to the two training sites based on how many Full Tilt Points a player earns. For example, if a user earns 3,000 points on Full Tilt, they get one free month of StoxPoker training, while 5,500 points merit one free month of Cardrunners. Players do not have to cash in their Full Tilt Points in order to redeem their free memberships, they simply have to sign up through the site and log time at the tables.
Caby spoke with Poker News Daily about how the idea for the promotion came about: “To be honest, we saw Full Tilt had a promotion where they were giving away 1% of [Phil] Ivey at the WSOP Main Event final table, so we thought we’d offer a version of that at CardRunners. Kind of just to be funny, but also to give members and people that signed up for TrulyFreePokerTraining something to sweat while I’m at the final table.” Caby also emphasized that, even if someone doesn’t win the promotion, there is still a lot to be gained just by signing up for the benefits of the site: “A lot of people are getting their CardRunners subscriptions fully paid for just by playing at Full Tilt.”
This is the first major live final table for Caby, who is better known as a cash game player than a tournament pro. He and the other players will start the match with the same number of chips they ended with in the semi-finals, putting Caby in the middle of the pack. He offered some insight on how he plans to approach the event when he returns to London in a couple of weeks: “The structure is pretty shallow. I think the chip leader has something like 40 or 50 big blinds, so there’s not really a whole lot of room for crazy maneuvering. To be honest, I’m just going to try to go in and play the best strategy I can for having a shorter stack and I’m not too concerned about any certain player.”
While Caby expressed enthusiasm about his own chances at winning a half-million dollars, he was equally excited about the chance to win money for someone taking part in Piece of Taylor: “I’m not really going to change how I play, but I’ll feel a lot better if I can send someone a lot of money.”

WPT, Party Gaming Officials Discuss Acquisition
Recently, PartyGaming, the parent company of PartyPoker, completed the acquisition of the World Poker Tour (WPT). Despite a last-minute proposal from Mandalay Media, a mobile gaming company, WPT shareholders rubber-stamped the sale for $12.3 million plus a percentage of future gaming revenues.
Poker News Daily sat down with WPT General Counsel Adam Pliska, WPT Host and Poker Hall of Fame member Mike Sexton, WPT Founder Steve Lipscomb, and PartyGaming Chief Marketing Officer Chris Welch to break down the sale.
Poker News Daily: Talk about why the WPT is a good fit for PartyGaming.
Pliska: Party Gaming was an initial tour stop sponsor of the WPT. We’ve had a long relationship starting from the beginning that was mutually beneficial.
Welch: PartyPoker wouldn’t have been the success it is today without the WPT. The fact that Mike Sexton was a PartyPoker ambassador and WPT host shows you the depth of the relationship.
PND: A last-minute proposal submitted by Mandalay Media was dismissed. Talk about the offer.
Pliska: As defined in our proxy statement, I can attest that there was an analysis of the offers. I can tell you that the company was pleased with the offer on the table from PartyGaming. When you look at the up front parts of it and the future revenue part parts of it, it made it very attractive. Throughout this process, I have come to never be surprised and I’m pleased with the results.
Lipscomb: The process was driven by our Board of Directors. They carefully did what they needed to do based on their duties to shareholders. It was an honor to have multiple parties that were interested. The final result, which was being with PartyGaming, really was the best for us.
PND: Will WPT regulars see any changes when Season 9 begins filming next year?
Pliska: What you’re going to see in Season 9 is business as usual. We’ll continue to be creative and innovate. I think, for the most part, you’re not going to see any interruptions.
PND: PartyPoker does not accept customers from the United States. Talk about being able to expose the WPT brand to the site’s customer base.
Sexton: One of the primary advantages of this whole situation is that we can expand the WPT brand worldwide. It’ll be in many more countries than it is now.
Welch: We are very excited by the partnership with the WPT. We are predominantly a European business, but we view this as one of the steps to coming back into the U.S. PartyPoker has 12 million members in the U.S. that we can cross-sell Club WPT to.
PND: Why is it important to be able to cross-sell to U.S. players?
Welch: We’re set up to take advantage of any U.S. developments. You can bet that when the market opens up, we’ll be at the forefront of it. The acquisition of the WPT will give us a substantial asset that we can leverage in the U.S.
Club WPT is a very successful subscription service and PartyPoker gets 2,000 to 3,000 downloads a day from the U.S. even though we don’t market there. As you would expect, we have a powerful marketing scheme that we will use to leverage the WPT brand across Europe.
PND: Will it be tough to bring more land-based tournaments to Europe, where you can already find series like the European Poker Tour (EPT)?
Lipscomb: We’re far from a new tour. There was no such thing as a poker tour since we launched the first once. We’ve been global since Season 1. If you are trying to launch one of the many additional tours starting to spring up in the marketplace, I wouldn’t want to be in that position, but I wouldn’t lump us in with that crowd.
Sexton: Recognize that the WPT is on television worldwide. People know who we are and what we do.
PND: Talk about the ongoing eighth season of the WPT.
Lipscomb: Seldom in the world of television do you have an eighth season of anything. It’s uncommon to have an eighth season when you’re working with the same people and they all still like each other. I truly believe that the joining of the WPT and PartyGaming is pretty exciting. Mike is the voice of poker and to have him in this great new synergy is an opportunity we’ve dreamed of.
PND: What does the future hold for WPT Enterprises, now Ante4?
Lipscomb: What we’ve announced is that we’re going to be looking for an opportunity as a publicly traded company to find businesses to join, acquire, or merge with to maximize shareholder value.

Mike Sexton Relives Poker Hall of Fame Induction
It was a great honor for me to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. It really is the ultimate career achievement award. To know that you’ll always be linked to the legends of poker – guys like Chip Reese, Stu Ungar, Doyle Brunson, Puggy Pearson, Johnny Moss, and Jack Binion – is an awesome feeling.
Several things made my induction into the Poker Hall of Fame extra special. The first is that this year, for the first time, a process was used to determine who would get in. This included being nominated by the fans and then being voted in by the media and living members of the Poker Hall of Fame. It also makes me the answer to the trivia question, “Who is the first player to ever get inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame through a voting process?” The most meaningful part to me was to be welcomed into this exclusive club by the Hall of Famers themselves.
Another thing that made my induction so special were the 2009 nominees I was up against, literally a “who’s who” of the poker world. Their poker accomplishments are amazing. The other nominees were Barry Greenstein, Erik Seidel, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Tom McEvoy, Dan Harrinton, Scotty Nguyen, and Men “The Master” Nguyen. I truly believe that most, if not all, of these guys will be joining me in the Poker Hall of Fame one day – and deservedly so.
The induction dinner was held at the Rio during the dinner break of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event final table on November 7th. It was a first-class, two-hour affair that was put on by Harrah’s and the WSOP and was sponsored by JAQK Cellars. A special thanks to all of those people. For all of us that attended, it was an evening to remember. I believe the process of getting elected and the Poker Hall of Fame dinner add a lot of prestige. I hope the induction dinner becomes an annual event.
I provided a slide show during dinner that featured my family (especially my one year-old son, Ty), numerous Hall of Fame poker players, and me. The World Poker Tour (WPT) was kind enough to provide some entertaining footage of Vince Van Patten and me as well as some clips of Doyle Brunson and the 2009 nominees when they won on the WPT. My brother Tom had some collages of me as well as some terrific pictures that were put on display. All of these things added a great deal to the event.
The speakers must have thought this was a Mike Sexton roast, but I must admit that they were quite entertaining. They included Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, T.J. Cloutier, and Tom McEvoy. Jeffrey Pollack then gave a very warm welcome speech and my brother Tom was the person I chose to introduce me. He was terrific, as I knew he would be. Thanks to everyone for their participation.
No one gets to the top of any profession without drive, dedication, being in the right place at the right time, help from some key people, and the love of family. All of those things certainly apply to me. I spoke, wove my way through my career, and thanked those who were extremely helpful to me along the way. They included Linda Johnson (who hired me to write for Card Player), Doyle Brunson (who hosted my Tournament of Champions and has been a longtime friend), Ruth Parasol (who hired me for PartyPoker), and Steve Lipscomb (founder of the WPT).
I was recently asked by a reporter, “What’s the neatest thing about being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame?” I said, “The neatest thing about getting inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame is when I think about my son and when he gets to Junior High and High School. The other kids will say, “Wow! Ty’s old man is in the Poker Hall of Fame.’ That’s really cool!” And it is.
Being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame is an honor I’ll cherish forever.

Palms Casino Pays $100,000 Fine to Resolve Poker Complaint
The Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a complaint after failing to correctly supervise a pair of poker tournaments in 2007. The resort will pay a $75,000 fine to the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) and another $25,000 to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) for the cost of the investigation.
According to a complaint brought by the state’s attorney general’s office, which was picked up by media outlets like the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the tournaments were held by third parties that did not register with state gaming regulators prior to the events. By hosting the tournaments on their site, the Palms used its license to legitimize the two events. However, the NGCB stated that it doesn’t want outside operators using licensed Nevada casinos to “legitimize less-than-legitimate types of programs.”
The two tournaments were brought to the attention of the Board when it was learned that prize money was left unpaid following their completion.
“By allowing the poker tournament(s) to proceed without adequate planning and follow-up, the Palms failed to exercise the proper discretion and sound judgment to prevent a situation that might reflect negatively on the reputation of the State of Nevada and its gaming industry,” the complaint said.
One of the tournaments involved was the inaugural United States Poker League’s Poker Bowl, which was held in October of 2007. The team-based event was at first considered to be a giant success after attracting many of the game’s biggest names, such as Doyle Brunson, Kathy Liebert, Scotty Nguyen, Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Greg Raymer, and Paul Wasicka. Team Cincinnati, represented by former World Series of Poker (WSOP) runner-up Steve Dannenmann and five other players, won the event and $600,000.
However, Poker Bowl’s owner and founder John Nightingale had difficulty keeping the company breathing and was forced to sell off its assets shortly after the event took place. The winners were never paid and individuals who had a financial stake in the business were left up in the air.
Some speculated that the reason Nightingale could not come up with the prize money was that he allowed too many pros to play for free rather than making them buy into the tournament. The Palms disbursed $450,416 in unpaid prize money to the winners after checks from the Poker Bowl bounced.
The other incident in the complaint occurred in August of 2007 after a tournament organized by Michael Eakman and Associates was not registered with the NGCB. The tournament was set up to benefit the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada, but Michael Eakman and Associates waited four months to pay the Jewish Community Center its share of the earnings.
According to a Palms spokesperson, the resort paid all of the prizes as soon as it learned of the complaint.

Mike Sexton Inducted into Poker Hall of Fame
Doyle Brunson kicked off the Poker Hall of Fame induction ceremony dinner at the Brasilia Room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. The festivities honoring Mike Sexton occurred during the dinner break of the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event final table at 7:00pm PT.
The guest list read like a “who’s who” of the poker community, including Howard Lederer, Phil Hellmuth, Jack Binion, Ali Nejad, David Singer, and Dewey Tomko. Also in the house was World Poker Tour (WPT) Co-Host Vince Van Patten, who told Poker News Daily, “I couldn’t miss this. Mike is such a great champion and a great friend of mine. What we share together on the WPT is one of the most important parts of my life. So many laughs and Mike is such a great guy. He is the real thing.”
The WPT is currently filming its eighth season. In fact, The Foxwoods World Poker Finals, the November WPT stop, is currently playing out at the Connecticut casino. On Van Patten and Sexton’s chemistry after eight seasons, the Poker Hall of Fame nominee’s co-host told us, “We could go for 25 years. We don’t get bored with it, we love it, and we’re not faking it. We’d probably do it for no money. We love it that much and we enjoy each other’s company. He’s one of a kind, a great family man, and the real thing in poker.”
Those on stage were Brunson, Jack Binion, Poker Hall of Fame Class of 2009 candidate Tom McEvoy, and T.J. Cloutier. The latter told the assembled crowd of about 175, “We both went broke plenty of times… This man would bet on anything… Mike always thought he was the best split pot player of them all. He could always play those eight or better games.” In fact, Sexton’s lone WSOP bracelet came in 1989 in a Seven Card Stud High-Low Split tournament.
McEvoy then took to the podium and admitted, “This man holds a grudge,” referencing a story from the first WSOP Pot Limit tournament ever held. Binion, a Poker Hall of Fame member who helped popularize the WSOP, commented, “Mike was the one who got PartyPoker started, the one who got the software started. He’s the one who really made poker.” Sexton currently serves as the ambassador for PartyPoker, whose parent company, Party Gaming, recently completed the purchase of the WPT for $12.3 million plus a percent of future gaming revenues.
WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack formally presented Sexton’s trophy and his speech was preceded by an emotional speech from Tom Sexton. The new Poker Hall of Fame member’s brother stated, “Mike has the gift of vision, where he can see things that others can’t in the poker world.” Sexton’s brother also referenced the WPT host testifying in a poker court case in South Carolina and serving as the spokesperson for approximately 500 players shut out of Day 1D of the 2009 WSOP Main Event when the contest reached capacity.
One of Tom Sexton’s most memorable quotes came when referencing the “Daddy Hall of Fame,” which he revealed, “If there were a Daddy Hall of Fame, Mike would be in it.” Young Ty Sexton, whose nursery has overrun the Sexton home’s dance floor, is just 15 months; Mike is 62 years-old.
Sexton received a 30 second standing ovation upon being introduced and recognized each of the other eight candidates for the Poker Hall of Fame Class of 2009: Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, McEvoy, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Barry Greenstein. Ivey, who was one of seven players remaining in the WSOP Main Event at the time, even stopped by, flanked at the door to the Brasilia Room by Layne Flack, Lacey Jones, and Nejad.
Sexton took the time to recognize a bevy of individuals, including Linda Johnson, Steve Lipscomb, and Brunson. He also recalled a phone call received over Christmas in 2000 from Ruth Parisol, co-founder of Party Gaming, who asked him to fly to India to launch the then-nascent online poker site. After eight months, PartyPoker was born, quickly challenging Paradise Poker for tops in the industry.
JAQK Cellars presented the two-hour affair, which wrapped up at 9:00pm PT. The living Hall of Fame members then took to the stage of the Penn and Teller Theater to resume play in the WSOP Main Event final table, with Sexton issuing the evening session’s “Shuffle Up and Deal” command.

Full EPT Season 6 Schedule Announced, Features Snowfest Stop
Come one, come all to the first ever European Poker Tour (EPT) Snowfest stop, scheduled to take place from March 21st to 26th at the Alpine PalaceSaalbach-Hinterglemm ski resort in Austria.
EPT Snowfest was part of the second half of the schedule of the roving tournament series released this week. The six latest additions bring the total number of tournaments to a baker’s dozen. The Austria event takes place at one of the country’s premier ski resorts, so players who bust out can hit the slopes in earnest to burn off tilt. PokerStars is offering prize packages to the event that include its €3,750 buy-in, bus transfer to and from the airport in Salzburg, and a six-day ski package complete with lift tickets and snow attire.
The Snowfest event seems to parallel the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, also a stop on the EPT circuit, in that the poker tournament takes a back seat to the bevy of extracurricular activities available. As was the case in London, several stops on the upcoming EPT schedule will feature a “Festival of Poker,” as founder John Duthie outlined in a press release distributed by PokerStars: “There has been huge enthusiasm for the new EPT schedule and also for the bigger ‘Festivals of Poker’ like the one we held in London and will be holding at the PCA, Sanremo, and Monte Carlo events.”
Nine locales make up the remainder of the sixth season of the EPT. Next up for players and tournament officials alike is the series’ first ever trip to Portugal for EPT Vilamoura. The €5,300 buy-in event kicks off on November 16th and will crown a champion five days later. Here’s a glimpse at the remaining slate of events:

The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is also a stop on the current season of the PokerStars-sponsored Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT). The event is sure to break nearly every record that the LAPT has to offer and is regularly one of the largest live tournaments held outside of the United States. In 2009, a record-breaking 1,347 players participated in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event and Canadian Poorya Nazari emerged victorious, banking $3 million for his efforts. A total of 746 PokerStars qualifiers were in the field, or 55% of those in action.
Four events have taken place so far during the EPT’s sixth season. Maxim Lykov bested the field in Kiev, a tournament that replaced the Russian Poker Open after casinos in the latter country were shut down. Then, American Carter Phillips outlasted his opponents in Barcelona and Aaron Gustavson triumphed over the field in London. Wrapping up two weeks ago was EPT Warsaw, which Christophe Benzimra took down for 1.5 million PLN.
Stay tuned for the latest updates from the EPT, LAPT, and other tournament series right here on Poker News Daily.

ChiliPoker sponsors new Paris-Vegas flight
As part of the innovative partnership, ChiliPoker will also be installing a VIP counter in Las Vegas for all its European customers.
The counter will offer a dedicated multilingual team in charge of helping tourists and poker players prepare their stays in Las Vegas, including restaurant reservations, hotel accommodations and transportation.
"Las Vegas is one of those destinations people dream of, but which appears inaccessible," said Alexandre Dreyfus, the French founder of ChiliPoker.com.
"As an online poker site we felt it appropriate to offer an answer to these dreams by offering all non-English speaking Europeans, and in particular the French, a chance to enjoy a unique experience."
The flight will be one of the few direct routes from Europe to Sin City. According to ChiliPoker representatives, Las Vegas will be key part of its marketing strategy for Europe in 2010.
To that end, ChiliPoker will refund €75 to all ChiliPoker account holders that reserve a ticket on the new flight between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31, 2009.

Anurag Dikshit’s Sale of Party Gaming Stock Receives Mixed Reaction
One of the major poker headlines this week was the news that Party Gaming Cofounder Anurag Dikshit would divest himself of nearly 114 million shares of the company’s stock, which is traded in London under the symbol “PRTY.” Now, the industry has had a chance to react.
The internet gambling think tank sported mixed reactions to the news, as Dikshit’s departure meant that a man who admitted to violating U.S. law in a New York courtroom one year ago would no longer hold any interest in the company. Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) Chairman Joe Brennan told Poker News Daily, “The thing to take away is that this is probably good overall for Party Gaming. When you have one of their founders pleading guilty, if and when things start to get normalized in the U.S. and Party Gaming comes into the market, they need to clear it off the books. The fact that he’s exiting the company is good for its future.”
When internet gambling will be legalized and regulated in the United States is anyone’s guess. Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) introduced HR 2267 in May as one solution. The bill outlines a framework for the explicit legalization of the industry and, although the measure is up to 62 cosponsors, it has not yet been scheduled for markup in the House Financial Services Committee.
On how members of Congress and others outside of the industry would react to Dikshit’s exit, Brennan explained, “If Dikshit leaving Party Gaming can be a benefit to that company, I would say that it does the same broadly for the industry.” Financial analyst Nick Batram told Bloomberg that Dikshit’s departure meant that Party Gaming “may also find it easier to raise funds from institutional investors rather than the founders for large sports gambling acquisitions.” The Wire Act of 1961 has historically been interpreted to mean that online wagering on sports is not permitted in the U.S.
Dikshit will purportedly turn over the proceeds of his sale, which will likely total more than ?188 million, to his charitable foundation. On the TwoPlusTwo online poker forums, posters questioned Dikshit’s charitable motives: “If he donated to an established charity that could not be mistaken for a front, then that would be impressive,” one skeptic noted. Some have speculated that tax benefits are the real reason behind his actions. Brennan told Poker News Daily, “He wants to get out of the business and focus on his charitable endeavors.”
The sale of two-thirds of Dikshit’s stake sent shares of Party Gaming plummeting. Trading above 284 pence on October 19th, the stock dove to 240 pence in 24 hours, a dip of 15%. PRTY closed trading on Friday on the London Stock Exchange fetching 243 pence, 135 pence above its asking price one year ago.
An article in the Financial Times summed up the reaction from most of the industry: “The truth, however, is that while the distancing of Mr Dikshit can’t be bad for Party Gaming, it is still frustratingly unclear what the odds are on a successful return to the U.S. market.” In five weeks, the financial services industry in the United States must fall into full compliance with the regulations of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The impact of the December 1st deadline remains to be seen, but the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) recently authored a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke asking for the UIGEA’s regulations to be delayed by one year.
Party Gaming Cofounders Ruth Parasol and Russ DeLeon, a husband and wife team, have not yet announced their intentions to sell stock or formulate a plea agreement with the U.S. Government.

Jason Somerville Leads WPT Festa al Lago Entering Day 3
Two days are in the books at the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) Festa al Lago event. A total of 275 players registered, a drop of 25% compared to 2008, and entering Day 3 on Friday, Jason “JCarver” Somerville leads the way with a stack of 557,000.
A total of $1.2 million is up for grabs for the winner of the $15,000 buy-in tournament being held at the Bellagio. One person who won’t have the opportunity to vie for the seven-figure payday is Barry Shulman, the reigning champion of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe Main Event and father of November Nine member Jeff Shulman. The elder Shulman, founder of CardPlayer Magazine, was knocked out to close play on Thursday after pushing pre-flop with A-4 and running into the A-10 of Poorya Nazari. The winner of the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, Nazari saw his hand hold to knock out Shulman.
Also eliminated late in the day was Full Tilt Poker pro Howard Lederer, who pushed over the top of a raise by Mark Seif for 60 big blinds holding pocket jacks. However, Seif called and turned over pocket kings. The board ran out Q-10-10-6-A to send Lederer home just a few hours after he bought into the tournament during the extended registration period on Day 2.
2008 WSOP Europe Main Event Champion John Juanda was sent packing shortly after registration closed at 5:00pm Pacific Time on Thursday. Juanda called all-in for his tournament life on a board of K-Q-5-9 with three spades holding 6-7 of the suit. His opponent, Somerville, held Q-10 of spades for a higher flush and Juanda was eliminated. The hand pushed Somerville’s stack to 240,000.
2009 Poker Hall of Fame nominee Erik Seidel, an eight-time WSOP bracelet holder, took a bad beat at the hands of Phil Laak to end his run in the WPT Festa al Lago. Seidel pushed pre-flop with A-K and Laak made the call with K-5 of diamonds. Sure enough, a five hit the turn to give Laak the win in the hand. Laak’s stack grew to 120,000, but he did not survive play on Thursday. Others who were ousted included Beth Shak, Phil Hellmuth, Kenny Tran, Paul Wasicka, Erik Cajelais, David Grey, Carlos Mortensen, Eli Elezra, Jason Mercier, and Mike Sowers.
Here are the top 10 chip stacks remaining in the Festa al Lago entering Day 3 on Friday:

8. Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah – 348,400

Anurag Dikshit Sells Remaining Stake in Party Gaming
According to an article that appeared in eGamingReview (EGR) on Tuesday and filings to the London Stock Exchange, Party Gaming Co-Founder Anurag Dikshit will sell his 28% share in the company for at least ?188 million.
It’s a curious twist on a story that began developing last December, when Dikshit appeared in the Southern District Court in New York. The Party Gaming personality pled guilty to violating the Wire Act of 1961 and agreed to fork over $300 million to the U.S. Government. He also faces up to two years behind bars, with sentencing scheduled for 2010. Dikshit’s spokesperson, Shimon Cohen, told EGR, “Anurag has paid the $300 million fine that he was asked to pay by the U.S. authorities and has decided it is time to move away from the company.” The Wire Act has traditionally applied to online wagering on sports, not online poker. Read the entire EGR Anurag Dikshit article.
Dikshit was originally rumored to be selling two-thirds of his 28% stake in Party Gaming; however, EGR later reported that the entirety of his shares would be unloaded. PartyPoker, the online poker arm of Party Gaming, withdrew from the U.S. market in 2006 shortly after the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was attached to the SAFE Port Act in the waning moments of that year’s Congressional session at the urging of then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN). The regulations of the UIGEA were approved as midnight rules by the outgoing Bush Administration and will be fully enforced on December 1st.
In a filing to the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday, where Party Gaming is traded under the symbol “PRTY,” Anurag Dikshit, under the names BT Nominees Limited and Crystal Ventures Limited, is listed as selling 75 million shares of PRTY, or two-thirds of his original total. The filing explains, “Crystal Ventures Limited is wholly owned by BT Nominees Limited who hold shares in PartyGaming Plc under a declaration of trust in favor of Mr Dikshit.” Dikshit owned 113 million shares prior to the sale posted on Tuesday in London and retained nearly 39 million “indirect voting rights.” The sale of the remaining interest has not yet been posted.
At the close of trading on Tuesday in London, shares of PRTY were fetching 240.10p and EGR noted that Dikshit expects to pull in at least ?188 million as a result of the transaction; the sum will be donated to charity. On Monday, PRTY was trading at 284p before Dikshit’s sale, which promptly sunk the share price by 15%. All told, Dikshit’s agreement with the U.S. Government last December ballooned the firm’s stock, which sat at below 140p before quickly climbing above 200p. Exactly one year ago, shares of PRTY were valued at 123p.
Ruth Parasol and Russ DeLeon, who founded Party Gaming along with Dikshit, were not expected to follow suit, according to EGR. In the meantime, PartyPoker officials have heralded the election of its ambassador, World Poker Tour (WPT) Host Mike Sexton, to the Poker Hall of Fame. Sexton is the lone representative of the Class of 2009 and will be officially inducted in ceremonies taking place on November 7th during the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event final table. Sexton is a WSOP bracelet holder and re-signed with PartyPoker in April.
In August, Party Gaming acquired the WPT for $12.3 million, outbidding a subsidiary of Playtech, which owns and operates the massive iPoker Network. Four months earlier, the company entered into a Non-Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, agreeing to pay the Federal Government $105 million. In the process, Party Gaming admitted that it solicited U.S. customers prior to the UIGEA’s passage and agreed not to do so in the future until the industry is licensed and regulated.

Anurag Dikshit, The Founder Of PartyGaming, Leaves The Company
According to EGRMagazine, the Indian millonaire and founder of PartyGaming, Anurag Dikshit leaves the company completely.

Earlier today Anurag Dikshit announced that he is selling his 28% share of PartyGaming and will focus on charity work at Asia.
But now Anurag’s spokesman, Shimon Cohen, told EGRMagazine that Dikshit will sell his remaining stake too. All the profit (around 180 million pounds) will go to charity.
Dikshit pleaded guilty to internet gambling charges under the US Wire Act (UIGEA) last December and had to pay a $300 million fine.
“Anurag has a charitable foundation that has been running for a number of years that he would like to be able to transfer the proceeds into, and to continue to do the works of the charitable foundation.” Cohen concludes the brief.

Howard Lederer Wins The WPT H.O.R.S.E. Tournament
Howard “The Professor” Lederer won the WPT Festa al Lago $10k H.O.R.S.E. event last Thursday. There was only 19 participants, but the field was quite tough featuring players like Eli Elezra, Andy Bloch and Scott Clements.

After the field was cleared, Ralph Perry made it against Lederer and they battled against each other in heads up. Ultimately Lederer was able to win and get the first prize of $92.150. Lederer’s latest big win was the 2008 Aussie Millions $100k event.
After the Aussie Millions Lederer could have won in some other major tournaments as well, e.g. two final tables at the WSOP this year. Howard Lederer, one of the founders of Full Tilt Poker, has won over 5 million dollars from tournaments in his career.

Jay Rosenkrantz Recaps 2 Months, $2 Million
We’re eight episodes through the G4 online poker reality series “2 Months, $2 Million” and the cast is $507,000 in the black. Among those who made waves in last week’s episode was Jay Rosenkrantz, who sat down with Poker News Daily to discuss his heads-up match against David “Viffer” Peat and the show in general. “2 Months, $2 Million” airs at 8:00pm ET on Wednesdays on G4.
Poker News Daily: Has it been surreal to watch “2 Months, $2 Million” unfold on G4 every week?
Rosenkrantz: It’s very, very, very surreal. Emil Patel and I live together in New York City and host a weekly party with all of our friends and family. Dani Stern is here for most of those also. Watching a hyper-stylized version of our summer with friends from childhood and college is pretty damn fun, but definitely weird.
For instance, seeing Emil get sneak attacked and destroyed by water balloons is hilarious both in the fact that it’s just really funny, but also that we somehow convinced a television network to put our dumb asses on television. Each “week” is actually around 80 hours of footage broken down into 21 minutes, so while the Jay, Emil, Dani, and Brian Roberts developed on television are very much accurate depictions of all of us, sometimes we get sold a little short (or are given too much credit). All in all, though, it has been an awesome experience and we all badly want to go back for Season 2 next summer. $2 million or bust!
PND: Has there been a traffic boost on your poker training site, DeucesCracked, as a result?
Rosenkrantz: Yes, our traffic and signups have gone up and I’m really happy with the results. We’re not talking like we doubled our membership, but considering a lot of people watching the show have never been exposed to poker or poker training videos before, I like the influx of new, genuinely curious users. [CardRunners founder] Taylor Caby got a deal with Full Tilt, so obviously I had to go out and one-up him with a television show.
PND: Talk about the roller coaster of a ride against David “Viffer” Peat.
Rosenkrantz: Some behind-the-scenes information about that match. First, it was one of our producer’s (Brandon) duties throughout the summer to try to arrange high-stakes matches for us. We wanted to play pretty much anyone (other than the top, top players) at heads-up No Limit. As our results started to not look great around Week 5 or 6, the four of us realized that we needed to push Brandon to seek out more matches for us. He put word out to most of the card rooms and poker agencies, but a lot of people just didn’t understand what the show was about, didn’t want to play us, or the money we wanted to play for was too big.
A few people accepted though, among them David Benyamine, Viffer, and Sami Kelopuro (LarsLuzak). Viffer’s doing a television show called “The Bet” and wanted the guaranteed exposure, so the match was set up to occur near the end of Lockdown (Lockdown, by the way, was an idea I had before the summer even started that the network wasn’t really into, but we were able to convince them of its merits when push came to shove).
We started playing and Viffer was playing really erratically and running me over. I was coming off 36 hours straight in the war room and had not only just lost back everything I made during Lockdown, but also lost a great episode for the TV show because now I was down a lot. I was expecting him to be a loose-passive live pro, but he wasn’t really anything like that, which caught me by surprise. The producers had their heads in their hands, they didn’t know what to do, and they’re not from poker, so they were just lamenting why I didn’t stop when I was up on him. Not only that, Brandon was feeling awful that he set me up to get crushed by this live shark and our chances of coming anywhere close to the goal were basically shot.
Then, Viffer took a break to get food and came back playing crazier than ever. I bad beat him in a huge pot to get close to even and this sent him on huge tilt. Total bajunky - this is when he started mashing pot. He had been doing it earlier, but not nearly as often, and now he was re-raising tons of hands and mashing pot constantly.
People speculate about how he would have such an obvious tell, but honestly it’s not obvious when you’re sitting there stuck $100,000 trying to claw back to even not only so you can win your money back, but also so you can save an episode of a TV show. We’re playing $40,000 No Limit, I had a big piece of myself, and the cameramen and producers were visibly shaken by what was going on. I had a lot of things on my mind unrelated to clearly processing what was going on in the match, not to mention that I had spent 38 hours in the war room!
PND: Did Peat’s betting tell prove to be true 100% of the time? How tough was it not exposing it every time so he wouldn’t adjust?
Rosenkrantz: Not 100%, but close to it. As you can see in the episode, the atmosphere in the room transformed from tense and excited to giddy and incredulous. It was really important to make sure that I didn’t take away or hero call down every single pot he was bluffing in and I’d have to guess that is definitely why he didn’t notice until it was too late. In that last $316,000 pot they showed, it was actually a good bluff by him where I happened to have a huge hand, but considering how often I was defending to his 3bets, it was a good bluff and I have to fold all of my non-two pair hands by the river. There were lots of cooler pots I also won that they didn’t show like 3-3 versus A-K on an A-3-X flop and A-K versus A-J on an ace-high flop. So, while it was an amazing, rock solid read, it was definitely made to be a little bit more cinematic than it actually was.
Funny aside - when I got back to up $100,000 on him, the producers started begging me to quit. They were so shook up that they could barely hold the cameras straight. The money was just so huge and incomprehensible, I had just completed this legendary comeback, and they couldn’t bear to deal with the thought of me losing more again.
Of course, we’re all poker players and there was a drought of nosebleed action this summer, so all of a sudden I had this insanely profitable spot and there was absolutely no way in hell any of us were stopping. There’s all of this great rough footage of Paul and Terry (the Executive Producers) begging me to pick up and go relax with the guaranteed win outside the war room and the four of us just berating the hell out of them for being huge donkeys. I think Brian threatened to cut off someone’s pinky finger. Anyhow, it worked out, the producers knew not to try to argue with us about poker ever again, and Brandon got out of the doghouse and was celebrated as a hero for the production.
The next day, the network executive in charge of the show showed up to the house to see how Lockdown had gone, saw the big black number in my column on the tally board, and G4’s collective brain exploded. Two years in development, seven episodes’ worth of footage and storylines, and they still didn’t fully understand the kinds of swings and drama that were possible in poker until that moment.
PND: Did you foresee fewer high-stakes games happening this summer? Had that been the trend?
Rosenkrantz: It was the trend, but every summer for the past three years, the games had picked up. We didn’t foresee the complete death of nosebleed No Limit and, because of that, we were really ill-prepared. I wasn’t as good at Pot Limit Omaha as I should have been and a few of us should have learned mixed games over the year. Second season or not, we won’t be caught off guard like that again next summer.
PND: What’s your favorite non-online poker activity you guys have done so far and why?
Rosenkrantz: Definitely trampoline dodgeball. Unfortunately, I think it’s cut from the show, but if you can get a group of people together in Las Vegas and want to blow off steam, there is nothing more fun than trampoline dodgeball. I can’t even properly describe it because it’s so crazy.
PND: Would you use a different strategy from the beginning if you had to do the show all over again?
Rosenkrantz: If we get a second season, we will have 10 months to prepare and now that “2 Months, $2 Million” has a passionate following in the poker community, I think more well-known pros will want to play us. More game selection, more opponents, and more chances to win or lose big - I think those are the best parts of the show. We learned so much this summer about how to approach the goal and about how to make a compelling television show about it. I just know in my heart that if we go back, it will be week to week, consistently, the best poker television there has ever been. I’ll guarantee that.
PND: Heading into Week 9, how are you feeling about making up $1.5 million to reach the goal?
Rosenkrantz: Not good. We obviously are not going to make it, but the question is whether or not we will crack $1 million.

PokerListings Founder killed by a Contract Killer?
Andreas Oscarsson’s father has been seeking the justice after the incident and he is sure his son was killed by a contract killer. The father appeared on a Swedish television program where he encouraged people to contribute tips to the police and help solve the murder.

Oscarsson in the WSOP Main Event this summer.
What raises the possibility of a contract killing is the rumour that 20-year-old man called Andreas Oscarsson was killed in Trollhättan last year. It seems like someone who wanted Oscarsson dead, failed miserably first time and murderers accidently eliminated wrong Oscarsson before finding the real one in August.
The killers entered and exited the bedroom of Oscarsson through an open window. While it was originally not released where Oscarsson was shot or how many times he was hit, it appears that he was struck six times by a gun with a silencer.
The theory that a silencer was used is based on a fact that the father nor any other person heard any gunfire even though the murder site is located in a densely populated area. Oscarsson’s two year-old son was with his father in Sweden when the murder took place, but the child is now back in the United States with his mother.
It is not known why Oscarsson was murdered and any suspects has not yet been found. People who knew him described him as a very well-liked, popular, generous, cheerful, and very multifaceted person. Still, someone wanted him dead, badly.
A member on the 2+2 online poker forum, who lives nearby the murder location, explained that “Police have been talking on the radio about it saying that it’s quite probably [something] from his past that has caught up to him in this unfortunate way.”

Murder of PokerListings Founder Andreas Oscarsson May Be Contract Killing
On August 3rd, PokerListings founder Andreas Oscarsson was found murdered in Trollhättan, Sweden. Two months later, police are investigating the incident as a “contract killing,” according to the Swedish news outlet Sveriges Radio.
Recently, Oscarsson’s father appeared on a television program to seek justice. At the same time, an outpouring of support has come from around the world, as Sveriges Radio noted that acquaintances from his childhood, college days, and the business world characterized him as a “very well-liked, popular, generous, cheerful, and very multifaceted person.”
An article that appeared in Bluff Europe shortly after the August murder raised the possibility of a hired gun: “Whilst details/sources still remain uncertain, word is out that a 20 year-old man by the name of Andreas Oscarsson was shot down last year in the exact same town in Sweden.” It was believed that the wrong Oscarsson was killed, leading to the August murder.
The appearance on the TV3 program was designed to encourage “more people… to contribute tips to the police [solve] the murder.” Oscarsson’s father appeared with what the media outlet described as a “distorted voice” and was unable to be viewed clearly on camera, presumably to protect his own identity. Oscarsson was at his father’s house at the time of the killing, which happened overnight. The assailants entered and exited his bedroom through an open window and police initially questioned Oscarsson’s two year-old son, who may have been awake at the time of the murder. The show in question was identified by the news outlet as “Wanted” and is likely similar to “America’s Most Wanted,” which airs on Fox in the United States.
The child is now back in the United States with his mother, who lived the New York City borough of SoHo at the time of the murder. While it was originally not released where Oscarsson was shot or how many times he was hit, the Swedish news outlet revealed that he was struck six times by “a gun with a silencer.” Neither his father nor others in what Sveriges Radio described as a “densely populated area” heard gunfire, leading to the theory that a silencer was used. He was found shot to death on August 3rd in his bed. Oscarsson was not involved in the day-to-day duties of PokerListings at the time, having stepped away from his role when his child was born two years ago.
The news took many in the industry by surprise, including posters on the popular TwoPlusTwo online poker forum. One member, who lives nearby, explained, “Police have been talking on the radio about it saying that it’s quite probably [something] from his past that has caught up to him in this unfortunate way. I had no idea that he founded PokerListings though.” Many expressed condolences to the family, especially to his two year-old son.
PokerListings is a clearinghouse for poker bonuses, reviews, and live tournament reporting. Its staff is fresh off covering the European Poker Tour’s (EPT) London stop, which saw Aaron Gustavson defeat reigning World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion Peter Eastgate heads-up, winning £850,000. A statement posted on PokerListings shortly after its founder’s murder lamented, “Andreas was a very generous person to those close to him, a brilliant internet marketing guru, and a savvy business entrepreneur - always looking to break new ground and break new records.”
We would once again like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Oscarsson. Stay tuned to Poker News Daily for the latest on this developing story.

Poker News in Brief: Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2009
With all the news out of London, it was easy to forget about the rest of the poker world. Fortunately, as part of our ongoing Poker News in Brief feature, we've broken down some of the lesser-known stories below.
This week we'll take a look at a renowned poker player going cosmic, five poker players getting a big relief and a new WSOP promotion from Milwaukee's Best Light.
Guy Laliberte blasts off
Cirque du Soleil founder and alleged high-stakes fish Guy Laliberte became the first Canadian space-tourist on Wednesday.
Laliberte, along with a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut, successfully blasted into space aboard a Soyuz spacecraft headed for the International Space Station.
The French-Canadian billionaire is isn't just along for the ride and on Oct. 9, if all goes according to plan, he will be the master of ceremonies for a global performance involving 14 cities and noted celebrities like Bono, Shakira, David Suzuki and former vice-president Al Gore.
The show is to promote the One Drop Foundation for access to clean water.
Laliberte is scheduled to return to earth on Oct. 11.
Milwaukee's Best Light starts poker promotion
Milwaukee's Best Light, the official beer sponsor of the WSOP, is giving their customers a chance to win a seat in the 2010 WSOP Main Event.
The promotion is part of the brand's two-month "Online Poker Challenge" which will see two seats awarded to the 2010 Main Event.
From now through Nov. 22, those 21 and older can visit www.wsop.com and click the Milwaukee's Best Light banner to register and compete in Texas Hold'em online.
At the end of each week, the 1,000 participants with the highest point totals will be eligible to participate in that week's final tournament, which will determine the top 100 point holders. Those top 100 qualifiers will advance to the month-ending grand prize tournament.
Players will also have the opportunity to earn bonus points by referring friends, answering trivia and obtaining codes inside specially marked boxes of Milwaukee's Best and Milwaukee's Best Ice.
Pro-online poker bill hits 60 co-sponsors
Rep. Barney Frank's Internet Gambling, Consumer Protection & Enforcement Act of 2009 reached 60 co-sponsors this week. Among the newest to sign on board with the bill are Rep. Lyn Woolsey, William Clay, Adam Schiff and Christopher Murphy.
The bill is currently waiting to be heard before committee, but support is starting to grow in the Republican Party.
Frank originally said the bill would be heard by Easter this year, but it was pushed back to July and then September. It's now likely the bill won't be discussed until the new year.
In the meantime, Frank has introduced a second bill that would postpone the coming enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act Dec. 1, 2009.
Judge dismisses case against Mt. Pleasant poker players
The decision to convict five South Carolinian poker players has been reversed.
Bob Chimento, Jeremy Brestel, Michael Williamson, Scott Richards and John T. Willis were originally found guilty of violating South Carolina's anti-gambling laws for running a private Texas No-Limit Hold'em game in 2006.
The group didn't profit from running the games, but money was raked from the pot to help cover expenses.
Earlier this year, South Carolina Circuit Judge R. Markley Dennis ruled that poker was a game of skill, not chance, but the five were still found guilty of operating a gambling house.
Thursday Dennis released a letter stating he had decided to reverse the convictions of all five players. The municipal court found the evidence "overwhelming" that Texas Hold'em is a game of skill.
Poker advocacy groups like the Poker Player's Alliance are touting it as a victory for poker players in the U.S.

Antoine Saout, James Akenhead Reach WSOP Europe Main Event Final Table
Not one, but two members of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) November Nine made the final table of the WSOP Europe Main Event. Last year, Ivan Demidov accomplished the feat. This year, Antoine Saout and James Akenhead will battle for the top prize.
Akenhead nearly found his first gold WSOP bracelet in 2008, but took second in a $1,500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament and cashed for $520,000. In that event, his opponent, Grant Hinkle, was all-in holding just 10-4 against Akenhead’s A-K. However, Hinkle made four tens in the hand and became one-half of only the second set of brothers ever to win WSOP bracelets and the first to do so in the same year. Akenhead is in his backyard for the WSOP Europe festivities, as he makes his home in London. He sits with the second largest chip stack entering final table play with 1.4 million, trailing only Team PokerStars Pro member Jason Mercier’s hefty total of 3.2 million.
Saout owns the sixth largest chip stack in the WSOP Europe Main Event at 701,000. The Frenchmen is also a member of the November Nine and sponsored pro of Everest Poker. Interestingly enough, he won a $50 satellite to claim his WSOP Main Event seat. Last November, he finished sixth in a Spanish Poker Tour event in Marbella for €5,800 and promptly reached another final table in Castellon in June for €780. Saout and Akenhead are the only two non-Americans at the final table of the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas. Saout will take to the felts in Seat 8 on Thursday in London.
The November Nine has another tie to the final table, as CardPlayer Founder Barry Shulman owns the fourth largest chip stack in London at 1.1 million. He is the father of November Nine member and CardPlayer Editor Jeff Shulman, who infamously threatened to throw away the WSOP Main Event bracelet should he win it. The younger Shulman owns the third largest chip stack entering the final table at the Penn and Teller Theater at the Rio in November.
Daniel Negreanu finished fifth in last year’s WSOP Europe Main Event and scooped £217,200. Now, he’ll seek his first WSOP Europe bracelet in this year’s feature tournament. Incredibly, Negreanu reached the final table in back-to-back WSOP Europe Main Events in London, but is the tournament’s short stack entering today’s finale. Negreanu, a Poker Hall of Fame nominee and four-time bracelet winner, recorded eight cashes during the 2009 WSOP, including a pair of six-figure scores in the World Championship of Omaha High-Low Eight or Better and Six-Handed Limit Hold’em.
Mercier is the chip leader entering the final table in London. The card-carrying member of Team PokerStars Pro hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and won a bracelet this year in a $1,500 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha event for $237,000. Mercier defeated online poker pro Steven “PiKappRaider” Burkholder in that event, which attracted 809 players. In May, Mercier won a tournament during the quarterly Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) for $86,000. Mercier sent six of the final 15 eliminated players to the rail on Wednesday to build his massive chip lead.
The final table kicks off today at 2:00pm local time. Here’s a look at the remaining players and their chip stacks:
1. Jason Mercier - 3,198,000
2. James Akenhead - 1,398,000
3. Praz Bansi - 1,160,000
4. Barry Shulman - 1,090,000
5. Markus Ristola - 784,000
6. Antoine Saout - 701,000
7. Matt Hawrilenko - 674,000
8. Chris Bjorin - 518,000
9. Daniel Negreanu - 438,000
The prizes up for grabs for the nine WSOP Europe Main Event final table members are as follows:
1st Place: £801,603
2nd Place: £495,589
3rd Place: £360,887
4th Place: £267,267
5th Place: £200,367
6th Place: £150,267
7th Place: £114,228
8th Place: £87,074
9th Place: £66,533

The Clown In Space - Guy Laliberté Takes Poker To The Sky
World famous Cirque du Soleil founder and a high stakes poker gambler Guy Laliberté heads to the sky.

The biggest high stakes donator of the past years, Guy Laliberté, wanted to be the first clown in space. Now his dream has come true as he is heading towards ISS (International Space Station). His 12-day trip didn’t come cheap as the ticket to space cost him about twenty million euros.
Laliberté doesn’t need to travel alone as he is accompanied by the US astronaut Jeffrey Williams and the Russian cosmonaut Alexei Surajev.
Between 2007 and 2008 Guy Laliberté has lost approximately 25 million dollars in the high stakes games on Full Tilt Poker. Then again, for a billionaire a sum like that is a small price to pay for a nice hobby.
Time will tell if other high stakes players will head after him to ISS or will Guy lose his fortune playing Chinese poker with the space station crew.

Matt Hawrilenko Leads WSOP Europe Main Event Entering Day 4
Two days of play remain in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe Main Event and, perched atop the leaderboard entering Wednesday’s battle is Matt Hawrilenko, a 27 year-old poker pro who goes by “Hoss-TBF” online.
Hawrilenko took down a $1 million first place prize for winning Event #56 of the 2009 WSOP in Las Vegas, a $5,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event. He triumphed over a final table that included Matt Waxman and Faraz “The-Toilet” Jaka and owns 701,500 chips in London, the only player to eclipse the 700,000-chip plateau. Hawrilenko already has three WSOP final tables in 2009 and has quickly become one of the most feared names on the circuit. Hot on his heels is CardPlayer Magazine founder Barry Shulman, father of WSOP November Nine member Jeff Shulman. The latter was featured heavily in last night’s coverage of the 2009 Main Event on ESPN and was seated at the feature table.
Speaking of the November Nine, two of its members remain in the hunt to repeat Ivan Demidov’s miraculous feat last year. In 2008, Demidov made the final table of both the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas and the WSOP Europe Main Event in London. Antoine Saout, who hails from France, sits with the 24th largest chip stack (202,000), while England’s James Akenhead boasts the 30th biggest tally (153,500). The nine final table members in Las Vegas will take to felts on November 7th, when they’ll return to play down to two. Then, the action resumes late in the day on November 9th to determine a winner. The tournament’s finale will air on cable station ESPN on Tuesday, November 10th.
Also still in the hunt is Doyle Brunson, who was sixth in chips entering play on Tuesday. Brunson has trailed off a bit to own the 21st largest stack out of 36 remaining players. He owns 10 WSOP bracelets, tied with Johnny Chan for second most overall; the duo trails Ultimate Bet pro Phil Hellmuth’s 11. Brunson has been shut out of the winner’s circle since 2005 and will look to make a run entering the play down day in the WSOP Europe Main Event. Brunson has 246,500 chips and joining him at Table 1 today are Jason Mercier, 2009 Poker Hall of Fame nominee Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Shulman, among others.
Here are the Top 10 chip stacks remaining in the 2009 WSOP Europe Main Event:

FullFlush threatens to break durrrr at WSOPE
But that didn't stop the outspoken Londoner from dropping by the Casino at the Empire to rail the action and a few horses he's put in the event.
"It's bullshit," Schwartz said. "There was something at the Vic [London's Grosvenor Victoria Casino] ages ago when I wouldn't take off my hat and now I'm nationally barred from all the casinos. But I've just snuck in and won about five grand on the roulette."
The brash 25-year-old burst onto the high-stakes online poker scene earlier this year posting significant profits against the likes of Tom "durrrr" Dwan, David "Raptor" Benefield and Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond.
But he's perhaps best known for the often visceral brand of trash talk he brings to the chatbox online.
Schwartz has verbally attacked just about everyone who's crossed his path, but he seems to have a particular dislike for Dwan.
"I don't like seeing durrrr just own off the poker world and just win all the money from all the other fish," he said. "I don't mind if Patrik [Antonius] and [Phil] Ivey win. I just can't stand durrrr. I can't stand durrrr's face, durrrr's voice, and durrrr's eyes. I can't stand anything about durrrr.
"He's just an arrogant social retard. He's spastic. There's not much more to say than that."
Schwartz takes particular issue with how he believes Dwan built his bankroll, claiming his money was made chiefly from beating Cirque du Soleil founder and reported high-stakes fish Guy Laliberté out of millions.
"He thinks he's the best, but he's just so annoying," Schwartz said. "People just don't even realize if Guy had not existed in this poker world, durrrr would be nowhere."
Although he's particularly vocal regarding his distaste for Dwan, the online phenom doesn't appear to be his only target.
Some of the biggest names in the game turned up for Day 1b of the WSOPE main event, including four-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, 2008 WSOPE main event champ John Juanda and 2000 WSOP Main Event champ Chris "Jesus" Ferguson.
But Schwartz' respect for poker's elite players seems limited as well.
"All these big players that you hear of, like Negreanu and all these old guys, they all won when there was better fish around - that's why they're famous," he said. "Obviously they did well and took advantage of poker when it was easy, but now it's tough. It's fucking hard to win now."
In recent months, the name __FullFlush1__ has been missing from the high-stakes games on Full Tilt Poker.
Schwartz says he withdrew most of his winnings from the site and because of a $5,000 per day and $15,000 per month limit on deposits, and a bit of a bad run trying to spin up the relatively small deposits into a sufficient bankroll for the bigger games, he's been forced to take his action elsewhere and avoid any confrontations with his nemesis Dwan.
Dwan is currently in London taking part in several events, including Matchroom Sports' durrrr Million Dollar Challenge, where he will take on Sammy "any two" George and a series of players yet to be named in 500-hand live heads-ups matches with a $500k buy in.
But Schwartz said he is unlikely to challenge his rival there.
"I'm not much of a live player and sitting down with $500,000 is obviously quite deep, so it's not the first thing that comes to my mind," he said. "But I would like to do a challenge with him of some sort at some stage quite soon."
It appears more likely that he will eventually meet Dwan online in Full Tilt's 50,000 hand durrrr Challenge, although Dwan is still in the midst of taking on Antonius and Schwartz isn't quite sure he's ready.
"I'd like to do that," he said. "I'd do that right now at $100/$200 with durrrr snap, but $200/$400 is a bit much. I suppose I could do that with my roll right now, but I'd feel like I was short if I started getting stuck right away."
Both players are set to take part in the PKR Heads Up Grand Slam in London beginning Oct. 8 and will meet there if they both reach the semifinals.
Anxiously awaiting the start of that, Schwartz sounded more than eager to get a shot at Dwan no matter where it is.
"I've smashed him," he said. "I'm up like 600 grand on him online. I would be up 800 grand, but we did these 200 grand flips when I was tilted one day and he won both of them. I kill this guy. This guy is like an autistic retard. If you just get a little bit into his head he can't deal with it.
"I'm sending him broke before the end of 2010. That's my goal."

Linda Johnson Goes to Camp
I recently returned from a 10-day trip to Indiana. The first part of the trip was spent at the Hollywood Casino (formerly Argosy Casino) in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The new $336 million facility is more than twice the size of its former vessel. The two decks, each wider than an aircraft carrier and nearly as long as a football field, make it the largest riverboat in the country. It gives one the feel of being in a luxurious casino with all of the bells and whistles.
Hollywood Casino has more than 270,000 square feet of space, including 150,000 square feet for gaming with 88 tables, 3,200 slots, and electronic table games. The Hollywood décor and theme is flawlessly executed throughout. The casino brings classic Hollywood to life with a 60-foot serpentine video wall, nine large billboards, and more than 300 flat screen displays featuring first-run movie trailers, video shorts, entertainment programming, and sporting events. Among the casino’s major attractions is an exclusive VIP Producer’s Lounge and an expanded high-limit gaming area.
I’d been to Argosy a few times in the past three years and had always enjoyed the gaming and hospitality there, so decided that the opening of its brand new 41-table poker room (the largest in the Midwest) and the Indiana State Poker Championship would be two great reasons to return. My first mistake was booking a flight into Indianapolis instead of Cincinnati. This error resulted in a two-hour drive to the casino instead of 10 minutes. On the bright side, however, I got to spend the two hours getting to know the Hollywood Casino cardroom manager Thom “TK” Krauss and Tournament Director Kevin Dawn. TK is very much a hands-on manager and knows all of his regular patrons by name. He told me that he loves his job, which was obvious since I saw him there at all hours of the day and night. The poker staff and players were very hospitable and made me feel very welcome.
The poker room is very comfortable, with lots of space between tables, great chairs, and good lighting. Players’ hours are tracked so they can earn comps. By the way, the buffet at Hollywood Casino is as good as the best buffets in Las Vegas. The poker room is so impressive that it recently was selected to host a stop on the World Poker Tour.
Jan Fisher and I gave a poker seminar at the Hollywood on the Roof, a performance area with a panoramic screen resembling the Hollywood Bowl, where bands can entertain guests and video content can be projected in grand scale. Hollywood on the Roof features a high-energy circular bar that looks out onto the casino atrium. The seminar was well-attended and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the locals.
After five days at Hollywood Casino, I went to Indianapolis to participate in Mickey’s Camp, a charity event held annually in a campground called Bradford Woods. There is a separate men’s camp and women’s camp and the attendees actually attend summer camp for adults. They sleep in the same bunks, 12 to a cabin, that kids sleep in during their camp. Each camper gets to choose 10 activities from about 35, including flyfishing, police training, backgammon, Alpine tower, pistol and rifle shooting, gourmet cooking, raft building, canoeing, wine tasting, billiards, table tennis, beer tasting, boxing, jewelry making, photography, yoga, painting, hiking, darts, orienteering, and swimming. I teach the poker class and then run a tournament for the men and women. After my classes, I get to be a camper. This year I chose the following activities: massage, magic, bridge, grilling, backgammon, medical myths, self-defense, sports dialogue, badminton, economics, rifle/pistol, and CPR.
From the $1,500 fee to attend the camp, at least two-thirds of it goes to Indiana charities. This can be done because most of the food is donated by local restaurants and the instructors donate their time as well. The founder, Mickey Maurer, is a great ambassador and philanthropist and has raised more than $1 million for charity through his camp.
Although the attendees are extremely successful in the business world (during the first evening of each camp, we sit under a tent, everyone introduces themselves and tells what they do, and I am always blown away by how accomplished they are), most of them are not the caliber of player I usually encounter in my classes. They sure do have fun though! I had to chuckle when I saw two of the players get up in the middle of the tournament and say, “Thanks, I think I’ve had enough.” Then, they just quit and left their chips on the table.
This was my fourth year at Mickey’s Camp. I love attending charity events and this is one of my favorites.
Emilio Gomez Steps Down from Party Gaming Board of Directors
Party Gaming lost a member of its Board of Directors last week, when Non-Executive Directors Emilio Gomez stepped down from his post for personal reasons. The official statement from Party Gaming announcing his resignation made no mention of a future replacement and noted a balance between Executive and Non-Executive members of the Board in the wake of Gomez’s departure.
Now that Gomez has moved on, the Board consists of seven members, including Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan, Non-Executive Chairman Rod Perry, and Finance Director Martin Weigold. Gomez first began his tenure as one of the group’s Non-Executive Directors in December of 2007 and served as the representative for Party Gaming co-founder Anurag Dikshit.
In December of 2008, Dikshit became the first online gambling mogul to face legal action in a U.S. Court when he agreed to forfeit $300 million in earnings from the company after admitting to breaking laws related to the Wire Act in conjunction with Party Gaming. In exchange for the monetary settlement, Dikshit avoided jail time until at least December of 2010 and continues to reside in Gibraltar, where Party Gaming is based. Dikshit stepped down from the Board of Directors in 2006 to serve as the company’s Head of Research and Special Projects. There has been no announcement as of yet as to how Gomez’s departure will influence Dikshit’s influence on the Board. Party Gaming can be found on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol “PRTY.” It is the parent company of the popular online poker site PartyPoker.
Gomez’s resignation is just the latest in a long list of changes for Party Gaming this year. The company’s purchase of World Poker Tour Enterprises (WPTE) in August as well as numerous business-to-business ventures like the purchase of the online bingo company Cashcade and the launch of an Italian online poker site in tandem with Intralot have headlined a busy 2009 for Party Gaming. In its mid-year financial report, Ryan said the company would continue to pursue these profitable business-to-business deals and invest more time and effort in Party Casino, its online casino business.
In the week following Gomez’s announcement, PRTY shares have seen a slight drop in value, falling from a high of $282 on September 23rd to a low of $263.80 towards the end of day on the 24th. At the close of the business day on Friday, shares were trading at $267.60. Despite the slight drop this week, Party Gaming stocks have been on a rise as a whole in 2009, increasing in value from $195 in January to a high of $283 in May to its current trading price of $267.60.
PokerStars Ante Up for Africa Airs on CBS Sports
On Saturday afternoon, CBS Sports aired the second of two episodes of the PokerStars.net Ante Up for Africa tournament that played out during the European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo festivities.
Kara Scott served as the host of the event as it played out on the CBS Sports Spectacular broadcast. The nine-handed final table began with Daniel Negreanu holding a commanding chip lead with 151,100, well ahead of the 49,000 stack of EPT founder John Duthie. Alexander Armstrong and David Tuckman had the call of the event, which featured on-screen card backs with Ante Up for Africa logos and player names shown alongside their native country’s flag.
In the night’s first elimination, Teddy Sheringham raised with K-Q of clubs and rugby player Sebastien Chabal shoved with A-9. Team PokerStars Pro member Luca Pagano pushed over the top and Sheringham quickly folded. The flop came 4-J-2 and a running 10-8 gave Pagano a flush in the hand. Chabal was out in ninth and told Scott, “I’m disappointed because I wanted to win the whole thing. I’m happy, had a great time, and made some great friends.”
Meanwhile, Duthie hit the rails in eighth place after shoving pre-flop with A-K. Poker pro Tony G made the call with pocket jacks and turned a third jack. Duthie was drawing dead to the river and hit the exits. French journalist, writer, and presenter Patrick Chene was eliminated in seventh place at the hands of Dario Minieri’s A-J. Despite having a new arsenal of chips, Minieri folded to a re-raise by new Betclick pro Isabelle Mercier holding pocket eights. Minieri was getting 2:1 to call and Mercier held A-J for what would have been a coin flip situation.
Pagano was ousted after pushing pre-flop for 23,000 chips. Minieri called from the big blind at a discount holding J-3. The board ran out 2-A-3-J-J, giving Minieri a boat. The hand moved Minieri to second on the PokerStars.net Ante Up for Africa leaderboard, with Negreanu now the tournament’s short stack. Negreanu was sent to the rails at the hands of Mercier, who won a coin flip with pocket eights against K-Q. Negreanu told CBS cameras, “I was the chip leader and I seemed to be dominating and all of a sudden, the blinds went up and I folded and folded like a little wimp.”
Tony G was ousted in fourth place holding Q-6 against A-8 after an eight-high flop. Observing the action was “Heroes” star James Kyson Lee, who told Scott, “There are a lot of people here from all different fields. It’s great that we’re able to come together, do something fun, and raise awareness for Ante Up for Africa.” Norman Epstein, Full Tilt Poker pro Don Cheadle, and Poker News Daily Guest Columnist Annie Duke founded the charity in 2006. It is the centerpiece of an annual $5,000 buy-in gala during the World Series of Poker (WSOP), which aired in 2009 on ESPN.
Mercier and Sheringham both doubled up at the expense of Minieri, who was ultimately eliminated after running pocket tens into Mercier’s pocket queens. Mercier promptly doubled up with K-4 against Sheringham’s A-5 after the flop came 4-J-J. Then, the former member of Team PokerStars Pro called Sheringham’s all-in with A-2. Sheringham turned over 10-4 and the board ran out 6-8-Q-J-10 with four diamonds. Mercier’s deuce of diamonds was the only card of the suit held by either player and Mercier took down the inaugural Ante Up for Africa event in Monte Carlo.
Over €250,000 was raised for the Ante Up for Africa charity in Monte Carlo and no prize money was doled out to players. Instead, Mercier, who battled through a field of 43 runners, claimed a crystal trophy in the shape of a PokerStars logo.
