The Online Railbird Report: Phil Ivey and Ilari Sahamies Flip for Close to a Million
Ziigmund Loses Over A Million In One Session
Last evening at Full Tilt Poker Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies played Omaha PL $500/$1000 HU with Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan. Ziigmund’s games didn’t go as planned and eventually he lost almost 1.1 million dollars.

His session started with Dwan and at one point he was losing over $500k. In the end he was able to fight back and win some nice pots, but his loss against “durrrr” was still 235.000 dollars.
Ziigmund flops top set, but still loses to Dwan’s straight, $362k
Games against Ivey went even worse. Ivey seemed to have a “god mode” on and Sahamies couldn’t get anything good running. In a short time Ivey was up hugely.
Ivey’s over pair holds against Ziigmund’s top pair, $240k
Soon after all the losses Sahamies gets a bit steamy and wants to do some flips. Ivey’s “god mode” was unbreakable and Ziigmund lost $835k to Ivey.
Biggest flip ever? Ivey wins $400k
All in all it must have been one the bleakest days in Ziigmund’s life - and one of the better ones for Ivey with over a million profit.

Brunson, Harman, Antonius, Sahamies Join Caesars Cup Lineup
With the Caesars Cup getting ready for its inaugural action in just over three weeks, both American captain Daniel Negreanu and European captain Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad have been busy filling out the remainder of their squads. Earlier this week, each named two additional members to their teams, bringing the total to six of the eight that they will need.
Captain Negreanu, who seems to have been leaning towards more experienced players, continued to choose veterans with the selections of Doyle Brunson and Jennifer Harman. They will join a stellar lineup that also includes 2009 “November Nine” combatant Phil Ivey, 11-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner and former World Champion Phil Hellmuth, and reigning WSOP Europe champion John Juanda. If there is one drawback to Team Americas, it is that Negreanu seems to have chosen players with a wealth of cash game expertise, which could potentially override their tournament poker backgrounds.
Little needs to be said for Doyle Brunson’s inclusion. The grizzled veteran of the Texas road games was among those who brought poker to Las Vegas and brings the vast experience that his 50-plus years in the game has honed. He has captured ten WSOP bracelets in his career, with two from the Main Event. He continues today to be at the forefront of poker and has a nearly unequaled library of knowledge that will be critical for his teammates to tap into during the Caesars Cup competition.
If Negreanu was looking for a female to be a part of Team Americas, then Jennifer Harman had to be on the top of his wish list. The only woman who has multiple open tournament victories in the history of the WSOP, Harman has been one of the high-stakes poker staples for the past 25 years. Her steely determination and intuitive style of play will give opponents fits as they try to determine where they are in a hand.
Captain Obrestad has chosen a tactic almost directly the opposite of Negreanu by going for the younger, internet-seasoned players for Team Europe. Captain Obrestad has tapped two Finns, Patrik Antonius and Ilari Sahamies, to join her and defending WSOP champion Peter Eastgate of Denmark, Italy’s Dario Mineri, and France’s Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier on Team Europe.
Antonius brings one of the strongest games, tournament or otherwise, of any of the players in the Caesars Cup. While he is, so far, the oldest member of Team Europe at 29, he has traveled the world in his profession of high-stakes poker. In tournaments, he has earned over $2.8 million, including a European Poker Tour (EPT) championship in 2005, and has made untold amounts as a cash game player. Currently, Antonius is also engaged in one of the epic battles of 2009, the Durrrr Challenge, with Tom Dwan.
While he may not have the list of titles of other players in this event, Sahamies has the chops to be included in the Caesars Cup. Known as “Zigmund” online, Sahamies has claimed over $300,000 in tournament winnings and is especially known for his skills in high-stakes Pot Limit Omaha. Sahamies will also bring some chatter to the felt as he uses his verbal skills to attempt to throw his opponents off their games. Sahamies is also the face behind Power Poker.
Both Negreanu and Obrestad have two more choices for their respective teams before the Caesars Cup can be contested. Obrestad has one of her choices removed from her discretion, as WSOP Europe sponsor Betfair is offering a place on the team for an online player yet to be determined. All in all, the field is coming together as one of the strongest player lineups for a made-for-television competition in years. Poker News Daily will have all the details on the final selections, as well as the format of the Caesars Cup, in the near future.

Ziigmund in the Finnish Open
The Finnish Open poker tournament began today in Helsinki. While the tournament is relatively small, some interesting players showed up.

-Ziidmunds look of the day at Finnish Open
The Finnish Open poker tournament kicked off today with the €1000+€50 PLO event. As expected Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies came to play his favourite game - late of course. It remains to be seen if the €1000 buy-in is significant enough for him to stay focused on the game, or will he answer the call of the Cranberry Vodka.
Field of 100 players
Compared to the international level the amount of players is relatively small. It mainly consists of Finnish poker players that play regularly in the Helsinki Grand Casino.
Johan Storåkers is one of the few internationally renown players that came to compete for the title of the Finnish Omaha Champion. Also Juha Helppi showed up in a bit more relaxed outfit:

An another notable player is Jens “Jeans” Kyllönen, who recently begame the 2nd Finnish EPT-Main Event winner and is writing with Ziigmund and LarsLuzak at Coinflip.com. In addition to him, only Patrik Antonius has succeeded in doing the same.

“Martonas” with a Swing Again - Down $690k
Ilari Sahamies is known to have some serious swings, but Swedish “martonas” might be even bigger swinger. These both online gamblers are known to lose a million in a night and win another over the next session.

Not a rare sight. “Martonas” with a cool million on the table.
“Martonas” is known to seek challenge and he can be found playing head’s up with the top online pros. This time “martonas” collided with Brian Hastings. These two very aggressive players met at a $300/$600 NLHE table at Full Tilt Poker last night.
After the last hand Brian Hastings was the big winner as he left the table with a nice $690k profit. Although “martonas” is still up over $800k for the month, his downswing is brutally deep.
Just a few hands from the late session:
Hastings hits the straight for $258k

“Martonas” Getting Badly durrrred
There’s some really insane NLHE action going on at Full Tilt Poker at the moment. There were around $5 million spread over five tables. Most action was provided by Tom Dwan and “martonas”, but they were soon accompanied with names like Cole South, Patrik Antonius, Ilari Sahamies and such.
Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies wants to borrow money from Dwan but Dwan has his whole FTP roll on the tables.
At one point Tom “durrrr” Dwan had an amazing $3,5 million on tables with a cool $1.1 million stack on one table.
Mostly “durrrr” and “martonas” were playing head’s up and they still continue playing at the freshly named “durrrrmatology” HU table. Go check out the action at Full Tilt Poker now!
Just a few of the crazy hands:
$400k flip, “durrrr” vs “martonas”
$313k all-in, flush vs nut flush draw
“martonas” doesn’t play his nuts optimally, $600k pot
“durrrr” takes down $370k pot with a straight

Cole South hits Ilari Sahamies for $300.000
Cole South was running hot yesterday at the Full Tilt Poker nosebleed games. He faced against Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies for some action filled poker.

-Cole South aka. “MUCKEMSAYUUH”
Cole South and Ilari Sahamies played quite swingy PLO heads-up sessions at $200/400 tables. At first they only played for few minutes where South was able to win $150k.
They clashed a bit later again and South was victorious in the rematch as well. South exited the tables almost $300k up.
A bit later on South was able to win $100k from Gus Hansen.
South vs. Sahamies:
Terrible setup for Sahamies, South says ‘thank you’, $108k
South hits “an ok” flop, $126k

Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro down almost $3,5 million
Sami Kelopuro’s games haven’t gone that good at Full Tilt this year.

-Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro
There’s Finnish colour at the both end of the highstakesdb.com list. Patrik Antonius leads with nearly $5 million worth of high-stakes winnings when Sami Kelopuro leads the other end. Kelopuro has already lost a staggering $-3.429.307,86 this year.
Playing live better than online?
Hihghstakesdb.com isn’t the most accurate source, but the fact is that Kelopuro has lost quite huge amount of money.
Just awhile ago Doyle Brunson said in his blog that the Finnish players have hurt the Vegas Poker Economy and one of the players is supposed to be Sami Kelopuro. Brunson of course refered that the Finnish pros won gigantic sums of money from Bellagio’s cash games.
While Ilari Sahamies has told that he lost at Bellagio it might be possible that Kelopuro made a nice profit from the same games.
Anyhow, we hope that Sami’s games will turn upwards that he can fill the deep pit with an excavator.

Phil Ivey’s prop bets revealed: Millions on the line!
One of the biggest favorites in the World Series of Poker Main Event is Phil Ivey. He is undoubtedly the most skilled and well-known of the nine finalists and despite of his characteristic quiet personality the whole poker media have focused to this seven-time WSOP bracelet winner druring the past month.
The $8.5 million first prize is a life changing amount to each of the Main Event finalist, even to Ivey as it would nearly double up his tournament career winnings.
Yet it has now come to public that Ivey has prop bets going on for over $3 millions extra cash.

-Ivey making more millions
Recently Tom Dwan revealed that he’s one of the people who have laid a bet with Ivey. Dwan has to pay million dollars to Ivey if Ivey should win. Sounds big, but these two play for these kind of pots frequently on the high-stakes tables.
Next is Phil Gordon who took the bet which didn’t make his spouse happy at all. Gordon, who is a WPT winner and poker author, told that they are “quaking in their boots” on a recent Full Tilt Podcast.
Gordon also revealed that Andy Bloch has gotten into trouble as well. It seems that Bloch can lose a massive $2 million dollars. Gordon said that “Andy is quaking about 20 times more than I am”, which reveals quite a lot about the total sum of the bets.
After Gordon’s comments Bloch was forced to confirm the story. It seems that the prop bets were made when there were 2.400 players remaining in the Main Event. Getting the odds of 99-1, Andy bet $20.000 which’ll mean that he has to pay Ivey $2 million if Phil will Win.
We still don’t know all of the prop bets and we probably will never know the total sum, but it’s hard to think that players such as Patrik Antonius, Ilari Sahamies, or the well-known high-stakes gambler Sammy Farha wouldn’t have made some prop bets of their own.
Ivey is renowned to place high stakes prop bets at tournaments which apparently is a motivational thing for him because he has to leave the juicy high-stakes games for a while. If Ivey should win the Main Event he would most likely be confirmed as the richest professional poker player in history. He might gain such a big popularity through endorsement deals and tv appearances that he might be the first professional player to be known as a professional athlete.

The PokerNews Profile: Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies
Full Tilt winners and losers 1.1-4.7.2009
Patrik Antonius has been the dominant player on Full Tilt during the past six months. His winnings are a staggering 4,7 million dollars and if his run continues like this he will make a 10 million dollar year. Second biggest winner is Hac “trex313″ Dang with a bit over 3 million dollars so far.
Finnish power poker has been proven effective as Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies is currently keeping the third place with $2,3 million winnings even though he has had huge swings this year.
Not so surprisingly Tom “durrrr” Dwan have had great past months as he has managed to build up from -4 million to 1,5 million dollars. Hard work pays off as he has played almost twice as many hands than Antonius with 137403 raked hands when Antonius has only 87304.
Biggest loser so far is the Finnish youngster Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro with a bit over three million dollars. Kelopuro has had big swings this year as well and to be honest, his luck hasn’t been that good. You can read about his luck from (http://www.coinflip.com/blog/larsluzak) his blog.

Wahlbeck: I’m still quitting
The 33-year-old Finn has had a WSOP for the ages, picking up a first-place finish in the $10,000 Mixed Game World Championship, a second-place in the $10k 2-7 Draw Lowball World Championship and a third in the $10k Seven-Card Stud World Championship.
He also has a 13th-place finish in the $10k Omaha 8 World Championship and a 12th place finish in the $2,500 Razz event.
"It feels really good to be successful in tournaments," he said.
"I've been grinding for years and I feel like I've taken a lot of bad beats and had a lot of tough spots so everything coming together feels really good."
Wahlbeck has been a poker professional for six years and told himself the 2009 World Series of Poker would be his last.
He has racked up nearly $900k in cashes at the WSOP thus far and finds himself second only to Jeffrey Lisandro in the POY race, but that astounding success hasn't dampened his resolve to leave the game.
"I used to play pretty high stakes and a lot of hours per week and I think I won't do that anymore," he said.
The Finn told PokerListings he doesn't see himself giving up poker entirely, but he'll no longer play professionally.
"Maybe I won't quit tournaments entirely, but I'll definitely cut cash games," he said.
Wahlbeck has said that he started playing poker professionally because he started making more money at the tables than at any of his other jobs.
Prior to the WSOP, he'd logged less than $200,000 in lifetime tournament cashes, but it was in the cash games that the Finn really made his living.
"I haven't made billions or millions of dollars, but I've made a good living out of poker," he said.
His WSOP success is particularly impressive given that his cashes have come in the kinds of nontraditional games that have traditionally been the territory of poker's old guard.
But unlike the mixed-game advocates who populate Bobby's Room and other backroom Big Games, Wahlbeck honed his skills online.
"I play almost entirely online," he said. "Mainly cash games and the bigger online tournaments.
"I play a lot of the mixed games and I feel I'm pretty strong in all of them. A lot of players in these [mixed game] tournaments are good in a few games and have others that they're not great in.
"I try to play solid in Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold'em because I think my edge is smallest there."
He credits fellow Finns Patrik Antonius, Ilari Sahamies and Sami Kelopuro with helping him solidify his game.
"We're all very good friends," said Wahlbeck. "I used to play against Antonius and Ziigmund and LarsLuzak, but those guys are all so tough that I really want to avoid playing them."
So what does he make of the surge in Finnish nosebleed-stakes pros?
"It's probably because we all started really early online, like when online poker began," he said. "Most of the guys who were successful then are successful now."
Wahlbeck also suggested that the popularity of Pot Limit Omaha in his native land might be part of the reason players like Antonius and Sahamies are dominating online.
"PLO is more and more popular in Finland," he said. "Three or four years ago, you couldn't go into a casino in Finland and play anything but PLO."
Antonius, Ziigmund and LarsLuzak are household names in the poker world and Wahlbeck's WSOP success could vault him into the same rarified air as his compatriots.
But he remains adamant he's walking away from the game.
What he'll do instead, however, he hasn't yet figured out.
"I've been playing professionally for six years and it's not the best thing to put on your C.V.," he said.
What he won't be doing is going back to either of his former jobs as a substitute teacher and a freelance journalist.
"Teaching is fun but really rough," he said. "And writing is a grind. It's fun, but it doesn't pay nearly as well as poker."
"Maybe if a good business opportunity comes along, I'll take that."
Regardless of where he ends up, the Finn conceded he's definitely in better shape for a fresh start now than a few months ago.
"Life's a lot more fun now, especially since the WSOP has been so good."
Jeffrey Lisandro's third WSOP bracelet win vaulted the Aussie over Wahlbeck in the Player of the Year race, but the Finn still finds himself in second place overall with 13 events to go.
Keep it locked on PokerListings.com to see if Wahlbeck can regain the lead and pull off a swan song of epic proportions.

Hastings collides with Hansen: Hastings goes down $350k
Brian “Stinger88” Hastings decided to play Heads-Up PLO with Gus Hansen on Full Tilt Poker. Hastings got to feel what a true $500/$1000 “Hansen Knockout” feels like.

Brian Hastings
Gus Hansens skills are widely discussed. Ilari Sahamies among others has commented on him in plenty of way. Brian hastings however got into claws of really bad luck while playing against Hansen.
During 54 played hands Hastings lost $350,000. Hansen hit each one of his draws and Hastings on the other hand lost 6 biggest pots of the sessions.
Gus Hansen: very sick
Brian Hastings: yeah I think ur chances of winnign all those consecutively is similar to winning powerball
Gus Hansen: GG
Flush Draw brings victory
In one hand Hastings 4-betted prelop $56,000 while holding Ah-Kh-Qs-8h. Hansen called with Jd-6d-6c-5c.
Flop: Kc-Kd-7c
Hansen, acting first, bet $54,000, and Hastings answered by going all in. Hastings had just a little over what Hansen had bet, so the Dane got immense odds for his call.
9s on the turn didnt help out Hansen, but the 2c on the river gave him the pot with a flush. This can be taken as one example of the immense variance in Omaha.

The recent plans of Ilari Sahamies - the big name in the Finnish poker - have not gone without problems:“Last thursday I returned from rome where we went to watch the champions league final. The ticket cost some $1,000 two days before the game, and we thought we could get them cheaper later on.” Their pick was off as they had to pay nearly half more, the ticket price rising to $1,500.
Late from the game - Problems with Alchol
As they set foot into the stadium, the game had already progressed for 10 minutes. Sahamies had to acknowledge the fact that Barca had already taken a 1-0 lead.“I had put $80,000 on ManU - all because Chelsea was so unlucky against Barca in the Semifinal. I hated Barca very mucho” According to him the match was bad, and worst of all, they couldn’t get alcohol from anywhere in Rome! “The bars being closed we got booze only from fancy hotels, finally we got drunk anyway”
Boxing Night cancelled
After Rome it was time for a boxing night in Finland. Instead of seeing the expected Valujev-Shagajev match, they saw it cancelled because one of the lot had been identified positive of B-hepatithis. “The night wasnt very good, the best thing in the whole night was when Juho Tolppolas father tilted and climbed to the boxing ring trying to punch the referee.”
Big pots are not so special
”Nothing special has happened. Odd since I have played 3k/9k with durrr” he ponders. ”Last time I tried to stop and now it really is finished! Everyone has had their say especially about the $702k pot. I’m sorry to say, but it was just a pot and blinds high. On turn we went all in and that’s it.”
After Midsummer - Heading to Vegas
Sahamies says that he has played some poker in Rome with durrrr and Gus Hansen, but after coming back he has hardly sat down in a table. He gives out that he’s trying to get himself back to the grindmode, altough that’s not all he has his mind fixed upon: “I think that after midsummer I’m heading to Vegas, i’ll play at least in the main event.” He also says that he’d like to play in Bobby’s Room, and at least once he’d like to play while drunk: “I’d like to get some drunken poker on the way with durrr and others. We’ll see later on how that works out.”

Andres Iniesta robs Ilari Sahamies!
Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies, gambler like he is, played little sports betting about UEFA Champions League semifinal matches. First match, Arsenal versus Manchester United went wrong when he bet a draw and United won easily, but the second semifinal between Chelsea and Barcelona was the match that drove Sahamies mad.

Sahamies tilts again.
Sahamies was hanging out with his friends and watching the game with some snacks. He was relaxed and in good mood. Ziigmund had bet for Chelsea and everything looked fine after a good start and early leading goal for Chelsea. But in the end disaster struck.
Game was already on the injury time when Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta fired a huge shot from just outside the penalty box that found the way in to Chelsea’s goal (check the video from below) and put Barcelona in the final.
That goal tilted Sahamies so bad that he soon found himself playing a heads-up match against Tom “durrrr” Dwan. In the first hand Dwan rivered a $200k pot with 6-outer and that was the final nail in Ilari’s coffin: He was officially tilting.
Well, we all know what happens when Sahamies is tilting and soon Ziigmund was feeling nothing but relaxed anymore. Eventually he lost $650k that day and for sure he still wonders why everything went like it did. Still, it was a nice goal:

Ziigmund swings up, wins $1.1 million!
Ilari Sahamies has shown that he is fully capable of winning or losing huge amounts of money in daily basis. Well, that what he just did in past two days, as he lost $575k in first day but took that and even more back yesterday when he raked nice profits in mixed HA tables!

Sahamies is swinging in classic Ziigmund style!
Most of Sahamies’ $1.1 million winnings yesterday came from his compatriots Patrik Antonius (-$297k) and Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro -$259k), but player called “martonas” also participated in funding Ziigmunds poker account, who actually lost more than Kelopuro yesterday, -$295k overall.
Here are few key hands from yesterdays sessions:
Sahamies and Kelopuro both hit the flop hard and all the money goes flying in.
Sahamies makes an easy call to all-in against martonas with his pocket aces.
Ziigmund wins a huge pot worth of $544k with a flopped straight.
Gus Hansen made a really quick visit at Full Tilt Tables yesterday. Hansen played only 67 hands but managed to lost exactly $200k before he left, being totally pissed for sure! April continues to be a really miserable month for Hansen as he has already lost over $1.7M after just week and a half!

Phil Ivey destroys durrrr for $300k
This session with Ivey is just the latest in a lengthy string of losses for durrrr. In fact, his bankroll downswing coincided with the start of the new year as he has posted over $3.4 million in PLO losses since January 1.
Poker is beginning to seem like a bad nightmare for Dwan, with the pendulum of luck seemingly stuck over his opponents.
Since the first of this year, Ivey has won almost exactly as much as Dwan has lost playing PLO, posting a $3.4 million profit.
This impressive figure puts Ivey near the top of the leaders list, second only to the player everyone likes to call the "high stakes fish," Gus Hansen; currently sitting with over $4.1 million in PLO profit.
In fact, it's doubtful anyone would have bet on the fact that Dwan, Phil Galfond, Brian Hastings, Hac Dang, David Benyamine, Di Dang, Patrik Antonius and Ilari Sahamies would all be in the red for PLO profit this year. But they are so far.
Here are the five largest pots from this latest Ivey versus Dwan PLO session:

durrrr Challenge: Dwan implodes against Antonius
Although they only played for 460 hands, Dwan looked like he would make the most of it as he raked several pots worth nearly $100,000.
It all started to go badly for Dwan when he flopped the nut flush against Antonius only to have his opponent go all-in with a set of nines that eventually improved to a full boat.
Dwan was understandably tilted, and it didn't take much longer for him to give up on the session. He typed this in the chatbox:
"durrrr: i think im done for now
durrrr: too tilted
Patrik Antonius: k"
By the end of the session Antonius had logged a profit of $92,000.
Dwan was extraordinarily busy last night. In addition to the match against Antonius he found time to lose a $320,000 pot against Ziigmund, a $265,629 pot against Phil Ivey and even some big pots against Gus Hansen.
Not a great night for the New Jersey wonder kid.
