Sammy Farha Wins Third WSOP Omaha Bracelet
After a 20-hour final table and four-hour heads-up marathon, Sammy Farha defeated James “Flushy” Dempsey to take home his third World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in the $10,000 Omaha High-Low Split Eight or Better Championship (Event #25). All of Farha’s accolades have come in Omaha events. Farha also claimed nearly $500,000 for the win, while Dempsey, a U.K. native and 2010 bracelet winner, walked away with just over $300,000.
Farha is only one of five players to have nabbed a pair of Omaha High-Low Split bracelets. The other four represent an elite group: Thang Luu, Scott “BigRiskky” Clements, Main Event champ Scotty Nguyen, and Full Tilt Poker’s Chris Ferguson. On the competition he barreled through in order to capture his third bracelet, Farha told WSOP officials, “There are a lot of great players. The whole field is amazing. Every year. I think this is the toughest field in the entire WSOP. It is 212 players and they are all good players.” Here’s how the final table shook out:
1. Sammy Farha – $488,237
2. James “Flushy” Dempsey – $301,790
3. Yueqi Zhu – $225,326
4. Sergey Altbregin – $169,368
5. Tony Merksick – $128,097
6. Michael Chow – $97,508
7. Eugene Katchalov – $74,670
8. Abe Mosseri – $57,552
9. Steve Wong – $44,619
The big Omaha High-Low Championship wasn’t the only tournament going on at the WSOP. In fact, three other events were being contested at the same time. The furthest along at the end of Monday’s action was Event #24, $1,000 No Limit Hold’em. On Monday, the two starting days, during which 3,289 people played, were combined, with the 507 remaining players battling down to a final 30. The money bubble burst more than 300 players ago, so nobody needs to worry about cashing.
With blinds at 5,000/10,000 and a 1,000 chip ante, Joseph Grenon leads the way heading into Day 3 with 857,000 chips. Ireland’s Denis Murphy is the only other player above 700,000, sitting in second place with 751,000. Let’s also not forget about PND’s very own J.D. McNamara, who owns the 17th largest stack at 230,000. Here is the current top ten:
1. Joseph Grenon – 857,000
2. Denis Murphy – 751,000
3. Greg Pohler – 698,000
4. Jim Jeffrey – 656,000
5. Jaymes Rosenthal – 472,000
6. John Tolbert – 423,000
7. Kiet Tran – 407,000
8. Gordon Johnson – 402,000
9. Edgar de la Torre – 399,000
10. Yordan Mitrentsov – 373,000
Event 26, the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed tournament, has completed Day 1 with 156 players left. On top of the field is Will Haydor with 180,300, followed by Canadian Erik Cajelais with 163,000. CardPlayer Magazine editor and 2009 November Nine member Jeff Shulman sits in seventh place with 122,000. We also have a Jerry Yang appearance, as the 2007 WSOP Main Event champ is lurking in ninth place, just ahead of CardRunners instructor David “Raptor” Benefield.
Other notables still playing include DoylesRoom Brunson 10 member Chris “Moorman1″ Moorman, Justin “Boosted J” Smith, Titan Poker’s Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, Ferguson, Amnon Filippi, Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad, Alan “The Usher” Sass, “Captain” Tom Franklin, Daniel Negreanu, Marco Traniello, and Taylor “Green Plastic” Caby. Here are your leaders for the event:
1. Will Haydor – 180,300
2. Erik Cajelais 163,000
3. Richard Robinson – 152,100
4. Al Barbieri – 133,000
5. Farhad Madhani – 125,800
6. Joseph Baldwin – 122,300
7. Jeff Shulman – 122,000
8. Andrew “good2cu” Robl – 119,400
9. Jerry Yang – 110,600
10. David “Raptor” Benefield – 99,200
Event 27, $1,500 Seven Card Stud High-Low Eight or Better, could develop into an interesting story, as a female, Odette Tremblay, ended Day 1 as the chip leader, although she is just 400 chips ahead of David Levi. Dutch Boyd, who just won the $2,500 Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event, is in sixth position, last year’s WSOP Player of the Year Jeffrey Lisandro, is in eighth, and John D’Agostino, a name we haven’t heard much from lately, is in tenth. There are currently 208 out of 644 players remaining, with the top ten looking like this:
1. Odette Tremblay – 43,700
2. David Levi – 43,300
3. Daniel Studer – 42,600
4. David Warga – 37,000
5. Debbie Hickok – 33,500
6. Dutch Boyd – 26,000
7. Mark Provenzano – 25,500
8. Jeffrey Lisandro – 23,000
9. Felipe “Mojave” Ramos – 21,000
10. John D’Agostino – 20,000
John “Tex” Barch Wins $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Event at World Series of Poker
The largest payday of Saturday’s action at the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) went to John “Tex” Barch, who topped the field in Event #20, a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament. Barch, who made the final table of the 2005 WSOP Main Event, cashed for $256,000 and earned his first gold bracelet.
Event #20 marked the third largest Pot Limit Omaha in WSOP history at 885 players. Accordingly, Barch was quite elated to take home a bracelet in the rapidly growing poker genre. He told WSOP officials on Saturday night, “It’s nice to have one. It really is. We were talking earlier that we miss the old Horseshoe. But here, the tournaments are definitely deeper and harder to get through. I think it will be much harder for people to win multiple bracelets in the future.”
Despite not having a bracelet until Saturday, Barch owns nearly $3 million in career WSOP earnings. His third place finish in the $10,000 buy-in Main Event five years ago was worth $2.5 million and, all told, he’s reached three WSOP final tables. Here’s how the field shook out:
1. John “Tex” Barch – $256,919
2. Klinghammer Thibaut – $158,698
3. Trai Dang – $102,306
4. Nenad Medic – $74,946
5. Ashkan Razavi – $55,711
6. Chris Hyong Chang – $41,971
7. Blair Rodman – $32,007
8. Tyler Patterson – $24,695
9. Denton Pfister – $19,259
Also reaching a conclusion yesterday was Event #21, $1,500 Seven Card Stud. Richard Ashby became the third U.K. native to take home a bracelet at the 2010 WSOP, joining Praz Bansi and James “Flushy” Dempsey. On his proficiency in the age old game of Stud, Ashby commented to WSOP staff, “Stud was actually the first game I started playing. I’ve been playing it a very long time. There is a tournament in Baden (Germany) that I won earlier this year. I have been running very well in Stud lately.”
Christine Pietsch missed out on being the first female WSOP bracelet winner of 2010. Pietsch cashed for $86,000 and would have become the 16th woman to win an open WSOP event. Women have been shut out of an open event’s bracelet ceremony since 2008, when PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Mohegan Sun Main Event winner Vanessa Selbst found gold.
Three acclaimed online poker players – Titan Poker’s Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, PokerStars’ Pat “TorontoToro” Pezzin, and poker author Jon “PearlJammer” Turner – took sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively, in Event #21:
1. Richard Ashby – $140,467
2. Christine Pietsch – $86,756
3. Darren Shebell – $55,955
4. Dan Heimiller – $40,544
5. Owais Ahmed – $29,809
6. Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi – $22,235
7. Pat “TorontoToro” Pezzin – $16,826
8. Jon “PearlJammer” Turner – $12,916
Finally, the Ladies No Limit Hold’em Championship has played down to its final table. Sidsel Boesen leads the way with a stack of 789,000, well ahead of American Kami Chisholm’s second place tally of 529,000. There are no bracelet winners in the surviving nine, who will duke it out for a $192,000 top prize.
Among those who cashed in the Ladies Event were Bodog pro Evelyn Ng, Poker News Daily Guest Columnist Linda Johnson, 2008 Ladies champ Svetlana Gromenkova, “Amazing Race” contestant Maria Ho, and Bluff reporter Jessica Welman. The final table will take to the felts today with the following chip stacks:
1. Sidsel Boesen – 789,000
2. Kami Chisholm – 529,000
3. Timmi Derosa – 437,000
4. Anne Whalen – 344,000
5. Holly Hodge – 279,000
6. Vanessa Hellebuyck – 277,000
7. Bonnie Overfield – 226,000
8. La Sengphet – 206,000
9. Loren Watterworth – 75,000
No new events begin on Sunday. Instead, Day 1B of the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event (#24) will fire up at Noon PT. Keep it tuned to Poker News Daily for the latest 2010 WSOP headlines.

Eric Buchman, David Baker Earn WSOP Bracelets
In Event #18 of the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP), $2,000 Limit Hold’em, 2009 November Niner Eric Buchman held a slim lead over Hansu Chu when 10-handed action began, but Buchman was able to extend that lead in the early going by eliminating Daniel Quach in tenth place.
Already a winner this year in a previous Limit Hold’em event, WSOP bracelet winner Matt Matros was the next victim at the table, unable to revive his short stack against the onslaught of Matt Grapenthien. After William Jensen dispatched Gary Bogdanski in eighth, Grapenthien fell at the hands of Buchman, extending his lead. Within three hours, Buchman cracked the one million chip mark and continued to pressure his opponents.
Of the final six players at the table, Buchman, who finished in fourth place in the Main Event last year, was responsible for eliminating three of them on the way to heads-up play against Brent Courson. Holding a monumental 5:1 chip advantage, Buchman continued on his hot streak during heads-up play, wearing down Courson over the span of their half-hour fight.
On the final hand, with a board of 2-Q-2-7 rainbow, Courson’s last chips hit the felt holding Big Slick; Buchman’s success continued, as he called and tabled 10-7, making two pair on the turn. When no Ace or King came to the rescue for Courson, Buchman picked up a well-deserved WSOP bracelet:
1. Eric Buchman (Valley Stream, NY) – $203,607
2. Brent Courson (Grand Rapids, MI) – $125,737
3. Steven Hustoft (Lacey, WA) – $90,928
4. Flavio Ferrari (Rome, Italy) – $66,446
5. Hansu Chu (McLean, VA) – $49,068
6. William Jensen (Silver Spring, MD) – $36,619
7. Matt Grapenthien (Chicago, IL) – $27,609
8. Gary Bogdanski (Lyndhurst, NJ) – $21,025
9. Matt Matros (Brooklyn, NY) – $16,174
In one of the most watched tournaments of the day, the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball World Championship, David Baker, who made the final table in the $50,000 Player’s Championship, led a stacked ten-player field that included Erik Seidel, John Juanda, Daniel Negreanu, and Andy Bloch, who was eliminated in ninth.
Baker continued to take the fight to the remainder of the field, bumping Negreanu in eighth, Seidel in sixth, and David Booth in fifth. Juanda departed in fourth at the hands of Baker and George Danzer dropped out in third after being beaten by Eric Cloutier. Holding almost a 3:1 chip lead at the start of heads-up play, Baker stormed to his first WSOP bracelet after only a 20-minute battle:
1. David Baker (Rochester Hills, MI) – $294,321
2. Eric Cloutier (Lafayette, LA) – $181,886
3. George Danzer (Munchen, Germany) – $115,295
4. John Juanda (Las Vegas, NV) – $78,088
5. Doug Booth (Bowling Green, KY) – $55,482
6. Erik Seidel (Las Vegas, NV) – $41,270
7. Eric Kesselman (New York, NY) – $32,080
The $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament, Event #20 on this year’s WSOP schedule, reached its final table just before curfew. When Full Tilt Poker’s Nenad Medic eliminated Peter Costa in tenth place, the final table that includes Blair Rodman and John “Tex” Barch was set, with play picking up this afternoon. Medic, with a chip stack of 1.5 million, has a monstrous one million chip lead over his closest competitor, Barch.
The $1,500 Seven Card Stud tournament also was able to reach its eight-handed final table prior to the 3:00am curfew. Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi will lead the pack when play continues this afternoon, with Darren Shebell, Richard Ashby, and Dan Heimiller his closest competitors. Christine Pietsch will represent the ladies at the final table, while Jon “PearlJammer” Turner will start out on the second shortest stack.
The $1,000 Ladies’ Championship drew a sizeable field of 1,054, which included approximately 15 men – most notably Shaun “shaundeeb” Deeb – but none made it to Day 2. A total of 138 ladies will return for that action, with La Sengphet topping the field. Attention will more than likely be on the second largest chip stack in the room, 2008 WSOP Ladies’ Champion Svetlana Gromenkova, as she attempts to join poker legends Barbara Enright, Susie Isaacs, and Nani Dollison as the only two-time winners of the tournament.
In the $2,500 Six-Handed Limit Hold’em tournament, Event #23, 122 players will return for Day 2 out of the 384 who started the event. Leading the field is Pennsylvania’s Alexander Queen, but two other Americans in the top 10 will be watched heavily. Fresh off his bracelet win, Baker multitasked his way into seventh place to start today’s play, while Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo will begin play in fifth place.

Chuffed Up! Ashby Wins WSOP Bracelet
The 38-year-old Englishman from Vatford outlasted a tough final table that included the likes of Sorel Mizzi, Dan Heimiller and Pat Pezzin to win his first bracelet in Event 21 $1.5k Seven-Card Stud.
"It means a lot to me to have won it," said Ashby. "You just play for so many hours in these tournaments and you put so much energy into them."
Ashby beat Christine Pietsch heads-up to win the tournament. Pietsch would have become the 16th woman to win WSOP bracelet.
Despite ultimately falling short of victory, Pietsch was upbeat after busting and even praised Ashby's game.
"I'm really OK with this," said Pietsch. "I almost wanted him to win."
Ashby, for his part, was extremely impressed with Pietsch's performance. It was her first WSOP event and just the second tournament she had ever played.
"She was fearless," he said.
Known more for playing the high stakes games on Full Tilt Poker, Ashby seems to have developed an affinity for live Seven-Card Stud as of late.
Ashby won the Seven-Card Stud EM European Poker Champion in Baden in late 2009.
Coincidently the first poker tournament Ashby ever played was a £10 buy-in Seven-Card Stud event.
"I like the game and I've had good success in it," he said. "Maybe I should play it a little more."
Ashby joins Praz Bansi and James Dempsey to become the third Englishman to win a bracelet at the 2010 WSOP.
The final table originally looked to be Sorel Mizzi's to lose as he entered the day as the chip leader. The Titan Poker pro lost several pots in the early goings and was finally evicted in seventh place.
Despite being one of the most celebrated online players in the world, Mizzi is still in search of his first major poker title.
Dan Heimiller also appeared like he might finally win his second WSOP bracelet but he busted fourth.

Michael Mizrachi Enters ESPN Poker Player Rankings
Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi’s march through the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has turned plenty of heads in the industry. Weeks after a run-in with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Mizrachi took down the $50,000 buy-in Player’s Championship and banked $1.5 million, the largest prize awarded at the WSOP so far. Then, “The Grinder” nearly logged his second bracelet, but fell short in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud World Championship, where he took sixth for $69,000.
Each month, ESPN.com rolls out media-generated poker player rankings dubbed “The Nuts.” Poker News Daily’s very own Dan Cypra is on the panel, which moved Mizrachi into the top 10 in June. Also getting a vote is Bluff’’s Lance Bradley, who commented about “The Grinder,” “Mizrachi’s win puts his name back on the list of respected players. Had we done this list when Grinder first burst onto the scene by dominating WPT events, he’d be No. 2 or 3 each month. If he can continue to perform at the WSOP, he’s certainly got a chance to get there now.”
“The Grinder” was the runner-up to PokerStars pro Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier in the WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions qualifier held last Thursday. Mizrachi built a 2:1 chip lead heads-up for a spot in the $1 million Tournament of Champions, but could not hold on.
Also ascending into the top 10 after not appearing in May is Daniel Alaei. The winner of the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December, Alaei played second fiddle to Scott Seiver in the L.A. Poker Classic’s High Roller Event in February. According to the HendonMob database, four of Alaei’s last five live cashes were worth at least $100,00.
Tops on the leaderboard is Full Tilt Poker pro and 2009 WSOP Main Event November Niner Phil Ivey. Now the proud owner of his very own high-stakes poker room at Aria in Las Vegas, Ivey is widely considered to be the game’s top player. All but two members of the 10-man voting panel selected Ivey to sit atop the rankings, with Jason Mercier and Scott Seiver each also receiving a #1 nod. Ivey has paced “The Nuts” ever since its debut.
ESPN poker columnist Gary Wise noted that Ivey will remain a fixture atop his rankings for the foreseeable future: “I doubt very seriously I’ll put anyone else here as long as I’m included in the balloting.” Ivey is a seven-time bracelet winner, a 2009 Poker Hall of Fame nominee, and has finished in the top 25 of the WSOP Main Event four times since 2002 (seventh in 2009, 20th in 2005, 10th in 2003, and 23rd in 2002). All told, “No Home Jerome” has over $5 million in WSOP and Circuit Event earnings.
Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi vaulted from #9 in “The Nuts” rankings in May to fifth in June. Mizzi leads the 2010 Bluff Player of the Year voting and finished third in the Aussie Millions Main Event for $659,000 in January. He won the Borgata Spring Poker Open Main Event in April for $170,000, besting a talented crop of predominantly online pros at the final table.
Here’s a look at the top 10 in the ESPN “The Nuts” player rankings for June:
1. Phil Ivey
2. Jason Mercier
3. Tom “durrrr” Dwan
4. Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin
5. Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi
6. Patrik Antonius
7. Daniel Negreanu
8. Scott Seiver
9. Daniel Alaei
10. Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi
Players on the verge of making a run at the top 10 include DoylesRoom Brunson 10 candidate Faraz “The-Toilet” Jaka, Alexander Kostritsyn, 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, and John Juanda. Cypra’s top 10 also included Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad and David “Doc Sands” Sands, who final tabled Event #8 of the 2010 WSOP and already has two in the money finishes.
Bertrand Grospellier (Elky) Wins WSOP Tournament of Champions Qualifier
Team PokerStars Pro member Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier has only one cash in the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP), a 91st place showing in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament. However, he lodged an all-important win in the WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions qualifier, which played out on Thursday.
The freeroll, which will air as part of the WSOP Academy’s revamped website, featured nine of the game’s top pros lacking a bracelet. Tom “durrrr” Dwan skipped the Tournament of Champions qualifier, instead electing to compete for his first WSOP bracelet. Dwan was running deep in the 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship and held the seventh largest stack after Day 1. Perhaps the millions of dollars in side bets and opportunity to snag a bracelet were enough motivation for Dwan to no-show the Tournament of Champions sit and go, which instead featured Gavin Smith.
The action kicked off around Noon PT from the Lightspeed VT Studios in Las Vegas. The first player knocked out was Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi. The youngster was all-in with pocket sixes against Full Tilt Poker pro Gus Hansen’s A-3. By the river, Hansen had made a flush and the nine-handed WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions qualifier was truncated to eight.
Any Bloch was the next player ousted. The former MIT Blackjack Team member ran A-J into Smith’s pocket kings. “Iron Man 2” actor Don Cheadle, who pledged to donate any Tournament of Champions winnings to charity, followed shortly thereafter. Cheadle also fell to pocket kings, as the acclaimed actor ran pocket jacks into the superior pocket pair and couldn’t improve.
Paul Wasicka then doubled up at the expense of Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi with A-J against A-Q all-in pre-flop. Then, PokerStars pro Grospellier also doubled with A-J, this time against Hansen’s A-4. The all-ins were fast and furious, as despite Dwan electing to miss the sit and go, a Twitter post made by WSOP Academy officials noted that the structure was designed to accommodate events at the Rio: “Fast structure today at the WSOPA TOC – players have WSOP events this afternoon.”
UB.com pro Liv Boeree, who took down the largest European Poker Tour (EPT) tournament outside of the Bahamas in San Remo earlier this year, busted with K-Q against Smith’s pocket nines. Smith then gave a portion of his stack to Wasicka, who doubled with pocket nines against pocket fours.
Hansen departed in fifth place from the WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions qualifier after running K-9 into Mizrachi’s pocket sevens. Mizrachi then served as the executioner of Smith, whose J-9 could not draw out on A-4. The action slowed considerably three-handed, with Mizrachi, Wasicka, and Grospellier all vying for a seat in the $1 million freeroll that will air as part of ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 WSOP.
Mizrachi doubled up through Wasicka after hitting a set with pocket sixes against K-J. “The Grinder” was still on life support three-handed, only holding 9,000 chips with blinds of 600/1,200. However, Mizrachi survived to the finals after sending Wasicka to the rails with A-7 against A-6. The pot appeared to be headed for a chop, but Mizrachi spiked a seven on the river to eliminate the Victory Poker pro.
Entering heads-up play, Mizrachi held a 2:1 edge in chips, 60,800 to Grospellier’s 29,200. Ten minutes in, Grospellier quickly righted the ship and doubled up, but “The Grinder” still held a 2:1 chip lead. By the time heads-up play reached its first break, Mizrachi and Grospellier were deadlocked at 45,000 chips apiece. Grospellier ultimately opened up a 2:1 lead in chips as the blinds grew higher and the Frenchman’s aggression grew stronger.
“The Grinder” didn’t lay down a die, however, getting all of his chips into the middle with pocket fives against A-10. The wired pair held and Mizrachi was right back in the thick of it. However, Grospellier came out on top after his K-10 drew out on Mizrachi’s A-6 and earned a seat to the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions.
In case you’re wondering, the Tournament of Champions qualifier ended at 4:00pm PT, while the 2-7 Draw Lowball event began at 3:00pm.
The Tournament of Champions will feature 27 players and begin on June 27th. Then, the final nine will return to the Rio to play down to a winner on July 4th. Annie Duke, Joe Cada, Barry Shulman, Mike Sexton, and Mike Matusow all have automatic bids and 20 other players will join them based on a fan vote. The final seat will feature a U.K. player who qualified via the WSOP’s for-profit online poker site.

Nine Poker Pros to Vie for Final WSOP Tournament of Champions Seat
According to WSOP officials, the final World Series of Poker (WSOP) Tournament of Champions sponsor seat will be awarded to the winner of a nine-man sit and go put on by the WSOP Academy. Nine popular poker pros that did not qualify for Tournament of Champions voting because they’ve never won a bracelet will compete on June 10th for a spot in the $1 million freeroll.
The lineup is a veritable “who’s who” of non-bracelet winners, headlined by Tom “durrrr” Dwan. The youngster from New Jersey appeared in the top 10 following fan voting for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class despite not being old enough to rent a car. Dwan was promptly stricken from the ballot, but will now get his chance to earn a WSOP Tournament of Champions seat. Dwan was the runner-up to Simon Watt in Event #11 of the 2010 WSOP, nearly reaping the rewards of millions of dollars in bracelet side bets.
Andy Bloch is also a member of the high-stakes sit and go. Bloch has 10 final tables during WSOP and WSOP Europe play, including a runner-up finish in the inaugural $50,000 HORSE Championship to Chip Reese. However, the one accolade that has eluded him is a WSOP bracelet.
Danish poker sensation Gus Hansen will also take to the felts as part of the WSOP Academy’s Tournament of Champions sit and go. Hansen won three events during the first two seasons of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and is responsible for many Denmark residents getting into the game. Hansen has over $4 million in career WPT earnings and took second in the 2008 WPT Championship for over $1 million.
WSOP Academy CEO Jeff Goldenberg told ESPN.com why the popular training entity was sponsoring the unique nine-handed event: “We’ll be using the footage from this event on the soon to be released WSOP Academy Online. Fans everywhere can watch as nine extremely talented players battle it out for one of the most sought after seats ever given away. The WSOP Academy is very happy to be part of this opportunity.” Ali Nejad and 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth will provide commentary for the sit and go.
Goldenberg added in a press release distributed by WSOP officials, “The WSOP Academy will utilize the sponsor seat at the TOC to highlight the talents of players who are champions in their own right, but did not have an opportunity to be voted into the TOC. We have created a unique opportunity for our customers to watch and learn from these players as they battle for a highly coveted prize. We expect to see some great poker!”
The WSOP Academy’s roster of instructors includes Poker News Daily Guest Columnist Annie Duke, Hellmuth, 2004 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Raymer, and 2007 WSOP Europe Main Event victor Annette Obrestad. Other players set to take part in the June 10th sit and go include Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, WSOP Player’s Championship winner Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, UB.com pro Liv Boeree, Victory Poker pro Paul Wasicka, and “Iron Man 2” star Don Cheadle.
Duke, Mike Matusow, Mike Sexton, Joe Cada, and Barry Shulman earned automatic bids to the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions, which will begin on June 27th with 27 players. The final nine will convene at the Rio on July 4th to play down to a champion. One sponsor seat will belong to a qualifier from the WSOP’s for-profit online poker site, while the remaining 20 spots will be determined by a fan vote.
The Tournament of Champions is one of three events that will air on cable station ESPN as part of its coverage of the 2010 WSOP.

Justin Bonomo issues WSOP “Panorama Prop Bet”
With the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than two weeks away, poker players around the world are making all kinds of last minute preparations – accommodations, travel plans, playing schedules – before descending upon Las Vegas.
Over on the Two Plus Two forums, a few online players are drawing up final plans of their own, but they don’t involve houses, hotels, or airplanes. For today’s generation of young, forum-posting poker pros, it’s all about prop bets. With each passing year, prop bets are generating more and more buzz more for the WSOP and with good reason, as there are hundreds of thousands of dollars in side action.
The most intriguing bet to emerge from the 20-page thread thus far is being levied by former Bodog Poker pro Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo. As of this writing, he has clearly stated that the bet isn’t finalized, but he intends to have action booked by the eve of May 28th. Essentially, Bonomo is laying 10-1 odds that at least one person living or staying at the Panorama Towers condominium building will win a WSOP bracelet this summer. Billed as “The Panorama Prop Bet,” the wager is exclusive to the Rio and Las Vegas, which means WSOP Europe events do not count.
The parameters of the bet state that owners, renters, and even people crashing for a week are all eligible for Bonomo’s side bet. Before the bet is set in stone, however, he’ll complete a list; in order for a player’s win to count, their name must be on the last draft. So far, his preliminary list includes the names below:
Jennifer Tilly, Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Barry Greenstein, UB.com pro Joe Sebok, David Williams, Shirley Williams, Isaac Haxton, Scott Seiver, Aaron Been, Steve O’Dwyer, Alex Melnikow, Ben Lamb, Tyler Netter, Eric Froehlich, Brock Parker, Nick Binger, Micheal Binger, Nenad Medic, Matt Gianetti, Lauren Kling, Mike Sowers, Maria Mayrinck, David Baker, David “Viffer” Peat, Alexandra Vuong, Liz Lieu, Stephen Chidwick, Jon Van Fleet, David “The Maven” Chicotsky, John Aguiar, Allie Prescott, Shaun Deeb, Jeff Sarwer, EPT San Remo winner Liv Boeree, Noah Boeken, Lex Veldhuis, Evelyn Ng, Jimmy Fricke, Matt LaGarde, Ray Coburn, Noah Glimmer, Jay Farber, Dan Bilzerian, Victory Poker front man Dan Fleyshman, Keith Gipson, Brian Rast, Joe Piccoli, Joseph Cheong, and Ryan Fee.
Other players that Bonomo believes might be staying at the luxury condos include Greg “FBT” Mueller, Shawn Buchanan, Micheal Dimichelle, Bobby Baldwin, Shannon Elizabeth, Mimi Tran, Andre Akkari, Hunter Frey, Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, Johannes Straussman, and J.C. Alvarado.
Bonomo is currently accepting bets based on the rough outline and will be updating the complete list right before Midnight on May 28th. All takers will then have 24 hours to back out once he publishes the final list. Be sure to stay tuned to Poker News Daily, as we’ll be covering all future developments of the “Panorama Prop Bet.”
May 19th – Daily Deal
The witness list for the House Ways and Means Committee hearing is released, Freddy Deeb wins a WPT accolade, and we have a chat with the new WPT hostess.
Hello, I’m Sean Gibson and welcome to the Daily Deal by Poker News Daily, brought to you by PokerSource.com.
Wednesday’s internet gambling hearing in the House Ways and Means Committee features a “who’s who” of Congressmen that have had an impact on internet gambling, including gambling champion Barney Frank (D-MA) and UIGEA endorser Bob Goodlatte (R-VA). The hearing discussed various tax proposals related to internet gambling. And since taxes were discussed, there were two representatives from the Internal Revenue Service. The final panelist for Wednesday’s Ways and Means Committee hearing is Charles Steele, Deputy Director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network for the United States Department of the Treasury.
The hearing occurred at 9:30 AM Eastern Time. Check out the PND home page for a recap or click on Poker Legislation at the top of the screen.
When we return, Freddy Deeb makes big money at the World Poker Tour and PND interviews a former Playmate. It’s a tough job.
Over the weekend, poker veteran Freddy Deeb took down the twenty thousand Euro buy-in High Roller event at the WPT Grand Prix de Paris. For his victory, Deeb won two hundred and ninety thousand Euro, which takes his total live tournament career winnings above the $7 million dollar mark. Twenty-five players entered the exclusive, nosebleed event, but it came down to a two-horse race between Deeb and online star Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, who had to settle for “only” one hundred and twenty thousand Euro. Mizzi is a sponsored pro of Titan Poker.
On Tuesday morning, May 2006 Playboy Playmate Alison Waite hosted a Twitter chat to promote the World Poker Tour’s new Facebook app. Alison claims she loves poker because it doesn’t require athletic skills, and is definitely in favor of beautiful women promoting the game: “Poker is exciting and can be sexy, so why not have Playmates? It’s a no-brainer to have an enticing Playboy playmate promoting your site.”
Waite is also the hostess of ClubWPT, the World Poker Tour’s subscription-based online poker site. Other Playmates in poker you might recognize include Victory Poker’s Sara Jean Underwood and PokerStars’ Jayde Nicole.

Theo Jorgensen Wins WPT Grand Prix de Paris
World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner Theo Jorgensen came out on top in the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) Grand Prix de Paris on Saturday. Jorgensen, who once defeated Full Tilt Poker pro Gus Hansen in a boxing match, banked €633,000 from the €10,000 buy-in tournament. Jorgensen entered the final table as the chip leader.
A total of 247 players turned out for the Grand Prix de Paris and, when the smoke cleared, eight reached this weekend’s final table. Among those who sought poker glory in Paris and coughed up the €10,000 entry fee were November Nine member and Everest Poker pro Antoine Saout, Andrew Feldman, Aussie Millions Main Event winner Tyron Krost, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and PokerStars pro Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier.
Jimmy Ostensson was the final table’s first casualty, bowing out when his wired pair of nines could not hold up against the A-6 of Fabrice Touil. The flop came J-4-K, but a running A-6 sent Ostensson out of the Aviation Club and looking for a taxi on the world-famous Champs-Elysées.
Seventh place at the Grand Prix de Paris went to Arnaud Mattern, who picked an inopportune time to shove with A-Q, as Antoine Amourette picked up pocket rockets. Mattern, who won the 2007 European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague stop, picked up €82,000. Nourredine Aïtaleb was the next to go. Aïtaleb shoved with A-J, but ran into Per Linde’s pocket queens. Linde, who finished 13th in April’s EPT San Remo Main Event, was once one out away from elimination in Paris.
In the defining pot of the Grand Prix de Paris, Jorgensen doubled up at the expense of Amourette with pocket kings against pocket sevens. The board ran out 5-4-5-10-3 and Jorgensen scooped a 3.3 million chip pot, the largest of the tournament at the time. Amourette quickly doubled up to stave off being the Grand Prix de Paris’ fifth place finisher, a distinction that went to Touil, who committed his chips pre-flop with A-8. Jorgensen called with J-8, but spiked a jack on the turn to shrink the field even further.
Mikhael Guenni woke up with pocket fives when his stack amounted to just five big blinds, but ran into Jorgensen’s pocket nines and could not improve. Linde was the next to go. Short-stacked, he pushed all-in with a paltry 7-5 and failed to draw out on Jorgensen’s K-J. Jorgensen flopped a straight and never looked back, sending Linde home €234,000 richer for his wear.
Heads-up play spanned all of three hands. In the final pot, Amourette was all-in with K-6 and up against Jorgensen’s A-K. The board ran out 6-J-4-A-5 and Jorgensen claimed his first WPT title. The tournament marked Jorgensen’s first top 20 finish in a WPT event. His bracelet came in 2008 during the WSOP Europe festivities, where he outlasted a field of 165 players in a £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event for £218,000. Jorgensen defeated Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi heads-up for his WSOP title in a final table that also included Erik Friberg, Max Pescatori, Chris Ferguson, and Jason Mercier.
Here were the final table results from the WPT Grand Prix de Paris:
1. Theo Jorgensen – 633,902
2. Antoine Amourette – 328,690
3. Per Linde – 234,780
4. Mickael Guenni – 187,825
5. Fabrice Touil – 140,870
6. Nourredine Aïtaleb – 93,910
7. Arnaud Mattern – 82,175
8. Jimmy Ostensson – 70,435
Kicking off on Wednesday is the WPT Spanish Championship, which will emanate from Casino Barcelona. The €3,500 tournament crowns a winner on May 23rd and preliminary events begin on Monday. In June 2009, Mark Flowers defeated Per Sjogren in the finale of the WPT Spanish Championship, which attracted a field of 160 players.
Weekly Freerolls: WSOP in Sight
The winner of the freeroll tournament will be the first player to receive a $20,000 VIP WSOP Package that includes a $10,000 Main Event seat and up to $10,000 more in extras like shopping sprees, helicopter tours and expensive dinners.
It's a busy weekend for PokerListings players as PokerStars will also be running a make-up tournament with $50,000 in WSOP Steps Tickets on Sunday.

Faraz Jaka Enters ESPN “The Nuts” Top Ten Rankings For May
With the start of the 41st annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) just over two weeks away, a poll from ESPN regarding the top poker players in the world gives readers an excellent insight on who looks to be on track for outstanding performances at this year’s WSOP.
As a part of its poker coverage, ESPN.com convenes a panel they call “The Nuts,” which is a blog that features several prominent members of the poker media. One of the members of that panel is Poker News Daily’s very own Dan Cypra, who is joined by the three members of ESPN.com’s poker coverage: Andrew Feldman, Gary Wise, and poker pro Bernard Lee. Other members of the panel include ESPNDeportes.com Poker Editor Nahuel Ponce, Bluff Magazine’s editor in chief Lance Bradley and senior writer Jessica Welman, PokerNews editor in chief Matt Parvis, tournament reporter Don Peters, and PokerRoad’s Court Harrington.
The monthly task for the ten-member panel is to answer that age-old question that floats around the poker universe: Who is the best player in the game? The members of “The Nuts” look at which players are the best at a particular moment in time. For the month of May, the panel brought in two new names to the Top Ten list and dropped one player down the rankings due to a lack of performance on the tournament stage.
Entering into the top ten for the month of May is newly crowned World Poker Tour (WPT) Player of the Year Faraz “The-Toilet” Jaka. Noting his top 15 finish at the WPT Championship and his performances at the PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Bounty Shootout final tables, the panel determined that Jaka’s accomplishments were good enough to move him into tenth place on the list. “Jaka employs a reckless, fearless style of play, but he plays it so well that it drives a lot of opponents crazy and gets him the chips,” noted Peters in the ESPN.com blog. “Maniac or not, with the WSOP around the corner, he’s on the ‘To Watch’ list.”
Another player who did well during the WPT Championship, eventual runner-up Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin, also garnered accolades from the panel with his entry into the top ten. After not being ranked in the list prior to May, Baldwin enters “The Nuts” list as the #4 player. Noting one of Baldwin’s Twitter posts, Feldman joked in his comments on the blog, “Basebaldy” may have had some control issues when throwing out the first pitch when visiting his alma mater, but on the felt, he’s in control at all times.”
One player taking a particularly large tumble down the rankings was Daniel Negreanu. After being tied for third place on April’s list, “The Nuts” panel brought up the valid point that “Kid Poker” hasn’t been on his best game in the past couple of months and seemingly has been concentrating on the “made for television” events that are popping up. Peters writes in the blog, “Not sure if the times are catching up with him or what, but he might be pretty low on this list (or off) if he can’t put something together soon.”
Eight of the ten members of “The Nuts” panel gave first place votes to Phil Ivey (ranked #1), who has made $1.4 million online over the past month. Jason Mercier (#2), who won the NAPT Mohegan Sun Bounty Shootout and cashed in the European Poker Tour (EPT) stop in San Remo, earned one of the other two votes. Cypra nominated Scott Seiver (#7) for the #1 slot in the top ten.
“This list is about who’s hot now and no one is hotter on the tournament circuit,” Cypra states on the ESPN.com blog about Seiver. A look at his record says it all; he has $834,462 in live tournament earnings in 2010, including a victory in February at the L.A. Poker Classic’s High Roller event and a fourth place finish in April at the NAPT event at Mohegan Sun. Other players who make the top ten are Tom “durrrr” Dwan (#3), Patrik Antonius (#5), Carlos Mortensen (#8), and new Titan Poker pro Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi (tied for #10).
The top ten list from the panelists on “The Nuts” at ESPN.com could very well take on a whole new look come the end of the WSOP. “I believe there will be a major shakeup on this list after the next two months,” Feldman observed at the end of the blog. “With the WSOP offering a great chance to watch all of the world’s best players, those on the panel will get a close-up view at how each of them fares on a day-to-day basis.”
May 12th – Daily Deal
Straight ahead on The Daily Deal, we’ll talk about the fallout from the most recent CEREUS Network controversy, share details about the new PokerStars Big Game TV show and find out who posted big profits in the poker industry for Q1.
Hello, I’m Sean Gibson and welcome to The Daily Deal, brought to you by PokerSource.com, where players have won over ten million dollars in free poker gifts.
As we reported earlier this week, there is once again controversy surrounding the CEREUS Network. PokerTableRatings.com uncovered an encryption flaw that could expose hole cards if players are on an unsecured wireless network. The flaw was due to CEREUS using a custom XOR-based encryption system as opposed to the standard SSL. Traffic on the site, potentially because of the security issue, has dropped nine percent in the first ten days of May month over month. Worldwide, the CEREUS Network fell from the sixth largest network to ninth, according to PokerScout.com. Currently, the network is creating an OpenSSL encryption system.
A new poker television show will be making its debut in the United States in June on Fox . “The Poker Stars Big Game” will air Monday through Friday, and feature the top poker players in the world battling on the felt with a PokerStars qualifier in a high-stakes cash game. The buy-in for the “Big Game” will be a minimum of one hundred thousand dollars. Confirmed participants include Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, and Doyle Brunson. The show mirror’s GSN’s “High Stakes Poker,” which just aired its Season Six finale.
Coming up, a Titanic quarter for Playtech.
Playtech Limited, which owns and operates the iPoker Network, home of Titan Poker and Winner.com, released its financial results for the first quarter of 2010. The company’s revenues were up 29% year over year. The company’s poker action decreased slightly year over year, with a four percent drop in revenues. In a comparison with the last quarter of 2009, however, Playtech showed two percent growth in online poker. The iPoker Network is currently the fourth largest in the world.
That does it for today’s Daily Deal, be sure to tune in every weekday for our latest update. Don’t forget to bookmark our site and add us to your twitter feed at twitter.com/pokernewsdaily. See you tomorrow!

Team Titan announced
Titan Poker announced the rest of its team players
Last week we heard that Sorel Mizzi, who has been playing excellent live tournaments this year, had signed a deal with Titan Poker. Mizzi is the captain of the team, and now we also know the other team members.

They are Jonas Klausen (above) from Denmark, Marvin Rettenmaier from Germany, Frenchmen Yann Brosolo and Florian Desgouttes, British Sam Trickett and Joel Benzinou from Belgium. After Mizzi Klausen has the biggest merits of the team: at last year’s WSOP he became second in the $1.500 NLHE tournament, and he also played in the final at EPT Copenhagen 2009.
You can challenge these new pro players at Titan Poker.

NAPT Mohegan Sun Bounty Shootout Airs on ESPN2
On Monday, the PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Mohegan Sun High-Roller Bounty Shootout took center stage on ESPN2. The first round of action was shown, with table winners receiving up to $60,000. In addition, every entrant had a $5,000 bounty on his head. The contestant who racks up the most number of bounties receives entry into the next NAPT Bounty Shootout, which is still to be determined.
The field of 35 players featured nine Canadians, among them Team PokerStars Pro front man Daniel Negreanu, who was seated at the feature table. In the outer portions of the Uncasville casino’s poker room, Matt Glantz doubled up through Chau Giang after making a flush on the river. Giang was crippled in the hand and eliminated shortly thereafter. Then, NAPT Venetian Main Event runner-up Sam Stein doubled up through Brian Powell after making two pair on the river to crack Powell’s aces.
The first elimination of the NAPT Mohegan Sun Bounty Shootout was Venetian Main Event winner Tom Marchese, who ran A-K into Luis Vazquez’s pocket aces. Then, Vazquez sent Curt Kohlberg packing to record his second $5,000 bounty. After taking hits to his chip stack early on, Faraz “The-Toilet” Jaka doubled at the expense of Negreanu with A-Q against K-8 suited. Negreanu screamed “Jaka, Jaka, Jaka” multiple times throughout the episode to remind everyone of who his tablemate was.
Shawn Buchanan sent Marcello de Grosso packing. Then, Jaka doubled up again, this time at the expense of World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner Brian Lemke. Elsewhere, Jason Mercier eliminated Canadian Anh Van Nguyen to a chorus of chants by ESPN poker commentator Norman Chad of “USA! USA! USA!” Meanwhile, 2004 WSOP Main Event champ Greg Raymer was sent packing despite flopping two pair and DoylesRoom pro Hoyt Corkins suffered a similar fate.
Stein continued his impressive run, busting William Reynolds to record his second bounty. Then, Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, who donned a Titan Poker patch, was eliminated. Mizzi was formerly a card-carrying member of Team Betfair, but like Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad, appears to have found a new home. Buchanan sent Joe Cassidy to the rails with K-Q against Cassidy’s A-2 of diamonds after spiking a king on the river and Stein busted Barry Greenstein to rack up his third bounty and advance to the final table.
In the final elimination of the first of two one-hour episodes, Jaka busted Joe Gibbons with J-3 after flopping two pair and avoiding Gibbons’ flush draws on the turn and river. The second episode began with the Illinois native scooping pots with 5-3 and 7-6, the latter of which busted Lemke, who held A-Q. Jaka flopped trips and made a full house on the river to continue his domination of the feature table.
Jaka sent Negreanu home with J-6 against A-9 after flopping two pair and making a full house by the time all was said and done. Then, Mercier reached the final table by virtue of picking up pocket aces and sending Eli Berg home. Berg held just 9-7 in the hand and Mercier scooped his third bounty. Jaka dispatched of amateur Perry Horwich to join Mercier at the finale, which will air next Monday on ESPN2. In Horwich’s final hand, Jaka’s J-3 withstood A-J after Jaka flopped bottom pair.
Buchanan sent Steve Sung packing to pick up his fourth bounty. Back at the feature table, Glantz and Scott Seiver battled for the last spot in the final table. Seiver pushed all-in with pocket queens on a board of 8-2-8-5 and Glantz made the call with 10-8 for trips. The river was a three and Glantz moved on.
The final table will air next Monday at 10:00pm ET on ESPN2. The six-handed finale features Glantz, Stein, Buchanan, Mercier, Jaka, and Vazquez, who will actually begin with fewer chips since his first round table was played five-handed instead of six-handed.

Already in 2010 he has repeated his final table performance at WSOPC Tunica and made 17th in last week's WPT Championship in Las Vegas.
