APPT Sydney Grand Final Kicks Off December 1st

November 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

The PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) is preparing to wrap up its 2009 schedule with the $6,300 AUD APPT Grand Final running from December 1st to 6th at the Star City Casino in Sydney. Team PokerStars Pros and former World Champions Peter Eastgate and Joe Hachem are among the several hundred players expected to participate in the tour’s flagship tournament.

The APPT Sydney schedule kicked off with the $200 AUD Pink Diamond Ladies No Limit Hold’em tournament on November 22nd. Several other preliminary events are taking place before the Main Event gets underway, including a deep stack No Limit Hold’em tournament and a Pot Limit Omaha event. Once the Main Event is underway, side events include the $15,300 AUD High Roller, a $550 AUD Ladies Tournament, a $1,100 AUD team event, a $3,200 AUD Heads-Up event, and the $340 AUD Camp Quality Charity Event in aid of the Australian Children and Families Cancer Charity.

Last year, Martin Rowe defeated fellow Aussie Jason Gray for the APPT Grand Final title and $1 million AUD ($648,046) prize. The event was Aussie-dominated, as 39 of the 48 players who reached the money were from Down Under. The first ever APPT Grand Final was won by Grant Levy, who snagged USD $850,000 for his achievement and is now a member of Team PokerStars Pro Australia.

This season’s APPT champions – Dermot Blain, Simon Watt, and Dong-bin Han – won a seat to the APPT Grand Final as part of their victories. Blain collected $541,072 for his win at APPT Macau in August, while Watt earned $154,043 at APPT Auckland in October. Han took home $156,722 after claiming the APPT Cebu title earlier this month. The event in Cebu broke participation records for an event in the Philippines. The APPT Seoul event, scheduled for September 17th to 20th in South Korea, was postponed due to construction delays at the 7-Luck Casino and will be rescheduled once the construction is completed.

Overall, the APPT has been very pleased with the tour in 2009. Jeffrey Haas, President of the APPT, said: “This season’s APPT has been a great success with over a thousand players competing in the three events already held in Macau, Auckland, and Cebu. This has been made possible by massive enthusiasm for the tour right across the region. This season’s Grand Final in Sydney is set to cement the tour’s reputation for providing incredible events in great locations.”

On December 7th, the annual APPT Tournament of Champions event will take place. This invitation-only tournament features winners from the APPT as well as some of the biggest names in poker competing to help their favorite charities. The first year the tournament was held, Joe Hachem won; last season PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso took home the title.

Adrien Allain Wins 2009 APT Macau Main Event

August 23rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

In the Far East, it was a Frenchman from halfway around the world who emerged victorious. Adrien Allain, who hails from Rennes, France, won this year’s running of the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Macau Main Event. Allain banked HK $3.035 million for his efforts.

Allain qualified for the APT Macau festivities by winning a $5 tournament on PKR. In the online world, he’s known as zlatan35 and his largest poker cash prior to Macau weighed in at $8,000. His HK $3.035 million payday equates to nearly USD $400,000 at current exchange ranges. In the final hand in Macau, Allain drew out with A-3 against Korean poker player Inwook Choi’s A-Q after spiking a three on the flop. Entering heads-up play, Choi was a 2:1 underdog. Here’s how the final table shook out:

1st Place: Adrien Allain (France) - HK$3,035,000
2nd Place: Inwook Choi (Korea) - HK$1,660,000
3rd Place: J.C. Tran (United States) - HK$910,510
4th Place: David Steicke (Hong Kong) - HK$708,300
5th Place: Chris Chau (Hong Kong) - HK$506,000
6th Place: Michael Woo (Hong Kong) - HK$404,800
7th Place: Christer Hallberg (Sweden) - HK$303,600
8th Place: Winfred Yu (Hong Kong) - HK$202,400
9th Place: Casey Kastle (Slovenia) - HK$131,500

J.C. Tran holds two World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets and was arguably the most successful player at the final table. After scoring his first piece of hardware in 2008, Tran won another bracelet this year by virtue of winning a $2,500 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha event for $235,000. Tran won the 2006 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) Main Event for $670,000.

Tran, a member of the APT’s Poker Pack, commented in a press release distributed by tournament officials, “It has been a great 12-day festival for the Poker Pack. It is disappointing not to take down the Main Event, but congratulations to Allain. He played good poker and is a deserving champion. To take down such a major tournament for just $5 is quite something – there’s no doubt he has great potential.”

Day 1B of the APT Macau Main Event featured filming of the Chinese language poker film “Poker King.” Ten-time WSOP bracelet winner Johnny Chan predicted that the movie would be bigger than “Rounders,” which helped spur the growth of No Limit Texas Hold’em in the United States. Yu, who finished in eighth place, came to the Macau event as part of the crew of “Poker King.”

Tran was eliminated from the tournament when Choi and Allain checked the action down on a board of A-J-10-9-8. Tran showed the Dead Man’s Hand, aces and eights, but was trumped by Allain’s A-Q for a straight. David Steicke was ousted from the final table after running his pocket nines into Choi’s pocket kings. The board ran out 3-3-A-3-K, giving Choi a better full house and sending Steicke packing.

WSOP November Nine member James Akenhead made the trek to Macau. Also appearing in the field were 2008 WSOP Europe Main Event winner John Juanda, Chan, Liz Lieu, Season VI World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship winner David Chiu, new Team Ultimate Bet member Liv Boeree, Amnon Filippi, and reigning WPT Championship victor Yevgeniy Timoshenko. Matt Savage served as the APT Macau’s Tournament Director, a role he will reprise in October for the annual Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic.

In addition to finishing third in the Main Event, Tran won the Poker Pack Headhunter tournament in Macau. Other highlights included Team Korea (featuring Steve Sung, David “Chino” Rheem, and Brandon Wong) winning the inaugural JBET Battle of the Nations. A “Poker King” charity tournament was also held, with Poker Pack member Quinn Do emerging victorious.

Asian Poker Tour Festival To Be Stage For Chinese Poker Film

July 24th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

The Asian Poker Tour is busily preparing for the first ever poker festival on the grounds of the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau and, as an added feature for participants, the festivities from August 12th through the 23rd will be the stage for the filming of a Chinese poker film.

The film, tentatively titled “Poker King” and being directed by Chinese language directors Chan Hing-Kai and Janet Chun and produced by Amy Chin and Chan Hing-Kai, will use the Asian Poker Macau Festival as the stage for its movie. The production will tell the story of two poker rivals competing for world championship glory and features such Chinese actors as Louis Koo, Sean Lau Ching-Wan, Stephy Tang, Cherrie In and Josie Ho. It is expected that the film will be completed for its cinematic release later this year.

Tom Hall, the CEO of Asian Logic - which owns the Asian Poker Tour - states that the movie will only add to the excitement following the first APT event last year. “This is a very exciting project and is sure to provoke even more excitement about The Asian Poker Macau Festival”, Hall said. “Players across the region and from around the world are encouraged to come to the StarWorld and play at the Asian Poker Tour Macau when it begins on August 12th.”

There is also a possibility that some of the most prominent Asian poker stars in the game will have cameos in the movie. The APT’s sponsored professional players “The Poker Pack” - featuring recent World Series of Poker bracelet winners J. C. Tran and Steve Sung, 2008 “November Nine” member David “Chino” Rheem and Quinn Do, Nam Le and Kwang Soo Lee - are said to be in negotiations for substantial parts in the “Poker King” film.

Even though the film will be the focus of some of the attention in Macau, the tournament will be the first celebration of poker in the Chinese territory of Macau. The Asian Poker Macau Festival stretches from August 12th through the 23rd and will feature plenty of action for participants. Preliminary tournaments starting at a mere 500 Hong Kong Dollars (about $64 America) will be featured all the way up to the start of the APT Macau Main Event, a 32,000 HKD buy in (slightly over $4,000 USD). There will be three Day Ones for the APT Macau Main Event, which begin on August 19th. The final table is scheduled for August 23rd and will have television coverage.

Organizers of the Asian Poker Macau Festival have enlisted the expert skills of tournament director Matt Savage to oversee the time in Macau and Savage should provide a wealth of side games and events for those in attendance. High limit games and Sit And Go tables should be a prominent feature of Savage’s efforts.

Last year, the Asian Poker Tour’s journey to Macau drew some of the biggest names in the game for six days of poker and featured the debut of one of the current stars of the game. Professional players such as two-time World Champion Doyle Brunson and fellow former World Champion Johnny Chan (who is scheduled to return for this year’s festival), 2008 WSOP Europe champion John Juanda and popular female professional Liz Lieu were all part of the action. The tournament itself was won by the then-newcomer to live poker Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who picked up $500,000 for the APT Macau championship and went on to win the WPT Championship in April of this year.

The Asian Poker Tour is bringing the poker world to the Pacific Rim through a unique cooperation of companies. Through such online poker rooms as Party Poker, bwin.com and Titan Poker and land based casinos in the Philippines and Hong Kong, the field for this year’s event is expected to explode past last year’s gathering. For a full look at the schedule of preliminary events for the Asian Poker Tour Macau festival, visit the Asian Poker Tour website to learn more.

PokerStars’ Asian Pacific Poker Tour To Be Stage For Chinese Poker Film

July 23rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

As PokerStars prepares for the first tournament of the third season of the Asian Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) in Macau, officials have been informed that a Chinese poker film will use the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino – the host casino in Macau – as its stage.

The film, tentatively titled “Poker King” will be directed by Chinese language directors Chan Hing-Kai and Janet Chun and produced by Amy Chin and Chan Hing-Kai, and there are plans to use the Asian Poker Macau Festival as the stage. The production will tell the story of two poker rivals competing for world championship glory, and features Chinese actors such as Louis Koo, Sean Lau Ching-Wan, Stephy Tang, Cherrie In and Josie Ho. It is expected that the film will be completed for its cinematic release later this year.

Tom Hall, the CEO of Asian Logic and involved in the operation of the Asian Pacific Poker Tour, states that the movie will only add to the excitement following the first APPT event of 2008-2009. “This is a very exciting project and is sure to provoke even more excitement about The Asian Poker Macau Festival in August”, Hall said. “Players across the region and throughout the world are encouraged to come to the StarWorld and play at the Asian Poker Tour Macau when it begins on August 12th.”

There is also a possibility that some of the most prominent Asian poker stars in the game will have cameos in the movie. The APPT’s sponsored professional players “The Poker Pack” – featuring recent World Series of Poker bracelet winners J. C. Tran and Steve Sung, 2008 “November Nine” member David “Chino” Rheem and Quinn Do, Nam Le and Kwang Soo Lee – are said to be in negotiations for substantial parts in the “Poker King” film.

Even though the film will be the focus of some of the attention in Macau, the tournament will be the first celebration of poker in the Chinese territory of Macau. The Asian Poker Macau Festival stretches from August 12th through the 23rd and will feature plenty of action for participants. Preliminary tournaments starting at a mere 500 Hong Kong Dollars (about $64 USD) will be featured all the way up to the start of the APPT Macau Main Event, a 40,000 HKD buy in (about $4,000 USD). Once the APPT Macau Main Event starts, there will continue to be side tournaments for those eliminated early.

Organizers of the Asian Poker Macau Festival and the APPT have enlisted the expert skills of tournament director Matt Savage to oversee the time in Macau; Savage should provide a wealth of side games and events for those in attendance. High limit games and Sit and Go tables should be a prominent feature of Savage’s efforts.

The APPT Macau last year featured a 538 player field with Edward Sabat taking the championship over runner up Charles Chua. Sabat is expected to return to defend his APPT championship when it begins on August 24th and the championship final table will play out on August 30th.

The APPT smashed records in its second year as a major part of the world poker scene. In its five stops last year – which traveled to such areas as Macau; Seoul, Korea; Auckland, New Zealand; Manila, the Philippines and Sydney, Australia – the APPT awarded almost $5 million in prize pools. It is expected that the third season of the APPT should be even larger as poker begins to sweep the Pacific Rim.

PokerStars.com APPT returns with Macau festival

July 22nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
The APPT Macau Summer Festival of Poker will run from Aug. 25-30 with millions of dollars up for grabs.

The festival will feature a total of 20 events including the $5,200 Main Event and a PokerStars-style $11,500 High Roller Event all taking place in the official PokerStars Macau Poker Room at the Grand Lisboa - the largest poker room in continental Asia.

"I'm pleased to see the sport of tournament poker continue to grow in Asia," said Team PokerStars Pro and Poker World Champion Joe Hachem.

"I played in the first APPT Macau in 2007 when PokerStars planted the seeds of No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker culture in Macau and it's been incredible watching that legacy take root and bloom.

"There are now hundreds of local players, cash games running 24/7 and tournaments available every week at the PokerStars Macau Poker Room. I wouldn't be surprised if the next World Champion comes from Macau or elsewhere in China."

During its second season, APPT Macau generated the biggest prize pool ever recorded for a poker event in China with more than $1.5 million awarded. Noted American pro Edward Sabat outlasted a field of 538 players to take down a first place prize of $453,851 while Nam Le won the High Roller Event for $473,915.

This year the APPT expects to break their own records in Macau by drawing more players and creating a prize pool over $2 million.

"This season's APPT is set to be even bigger than Season 2 in terms of both number of participants and prize pools," said APPT President Jeffrey Haas. "This has been made possible by continued enthusiasm for the tour right across the region with amazing levels of participation."

The third season of the APPT is also scheduled to make stops in Seoul, Auckland and Cebu in the Philippines before culminating in Sydney for the Grand Final in December.

Last year some of most elite poker players in the world played APPT events including Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem, Lee Nelson, Isabelle Mercier, Lee Nelson, Barry Greenstein, Hevad Khan, Chad Brown, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier as well as John Juanda, Johnny Chan, Scotty Nguyen, Grant Levy, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Eric Assadourian and Liz Lieu.

888.com, Shane Warne announce Poker Ashes 2009

May 22nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
The tournament pits teams from England and Australia against each other in a series of five "test matches" of No Limit Hold'em poker and will be filmed for Sky Sports in England in June.

Legendary bowler Warne will captain the Aussies and Gough, the former Yorkshire captain, will head up the English side.

The winning team will win a $50,000 USD charitable donation to the charity of its choice - either the Shane Warne Foundation (Australia) or the Professional Cricket Association (England).

"Aussies don't like to be beaten by the Poms - whatever the sport," Warne said. "And I can tell you that Darren Gough and his English Poker Ashes team will face a stern test from our boys.

"We are taking this very seriously. I'm getting the best players from the Aussie changing rooms and you Poms are set for an absolute flogging."

While four of each team's six available seats will be filled by professional cricketers, 888.com is offering its players the chance to win one of the two remaining seats via online satellite.

Aussie hopefuls can qualify for their satellite final by winning either the daily freeroll (held Monday to Sunday at 8 p.m. AEST) or the daily $5 USD Poker Ashes satellite (8:45 p.m. AEST).

The Australian satellite final will be held on June 7 at 8 p.m. AEST.

Their counterparts in England can qualify for their satellite final by taking down a weekly freeroll to be held Thursdays at 8 p.m. BST or by winning one a $1 USD satellite to be held Saturday through Wednesday at 8 p.m. BST.

The English satellite final will be held on June 7 at 8 p.m. BST.

Qualifiers will receive entry into the Poker Ashes, travel and accommodation expenses, $1,000 USD spending money and a swag bag of autographed cricket memorabilia.

Eastgate and Demidov finally join the Team PokerStars

April 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in HighStakesNews.com

Both of the guys were sponsored by PokerStars when playing in the Main Event so it was just a matter of time when they would join the team. It took somewhat long until they were signed as the team member.

It was anticipated that PokerStars would’ve signed at least the world champion Eastgate sooner after winning the title in November 2008. It took about half a year, but finally both of them are part of the pro team.

Now that is a big pile of cash!

Eastgate, who will be using the screen name “PeteEastgate” from now on, became the youngest world champion ever when he beat the guy who was the early favorite to win the big show in Demidov. Eastgate showed his skills again when he beat everybody in a side event at PCA for almost $350k in January 2009.

Demidov broke some records as well last year, when he reached the final tables both in the WSOP Main Event and in the Main Event of the European version of the series in London. He also managed well in both, finishing third in WSOPE. In the future, Demidov will be playing as “Ivan Demidov” on PokerStars.

Last year was the breakthrough year for both of these European superstars. Actually, not many knew much about the pair before the Main Event. The success in WSOP have catapulted both to the biggest games in poker and even to the High Stakes Poker television show.

Eastgate and Demidov sign with PokerStars

April 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
Danish 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate and Russian runner-up Ivan Demidov, who also made the final table of the WSOP Europe Main Event in 2008, have joined Team PokerStars Pro.

"It feels great to finally be part of the team," Demidov, 27, told PokerListings Thursday. "It's going to allow me to travel more and play more events.

"I really enjoy playing offline in live events and it's great to become a team member with all these other great players."

Eastgate, who at 22 years old became the youngest WSOP Main Event champion in history in 2008, followed up the $9,152,416 win by banking $343,000 at the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure when he took down a $5k side event there.

However, the Danish pro is being careful with his newfound wealth.

"I won't be splashing out on expensive things or living a crazy life," he said. "I'm thinking carefully about how to invest the money so that I make the right decision."

Both players were weaned on the game online, and now Eastgate can be found on PokerStars using the screen name "PeteEastgate" and Demidov as "Ivan Demidov."

On the live felt, both have committed to playing EPT San Remo and the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo before making their return to Vegas for the 2009 WSOP.

"I would like to repeat the success I had last year, but obviously I don't think I will be able to," said Demidov, who will also be playing in the PokerStars.com Russian Poker Tour event set for Moscow this May.

"I have serious plans to train and play a lot before the WSOP and hopefully I will be ready. I would like to make more final tables and I will be taking it very seriously."

Little seeks POY repeat at WPT Foxwoods

April 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
In fact, WPT Season 6 Player of the Year Jonathan Little will enter this week's Foxwoods Poker Classic within striking distance of a repeat performance here in Season 7.

Little sits tied for third on the World Poker Tour's Player of the Year leaderboard, his 1,000 POY points just behind John Phan (1,400) and Kathy Liebert (1,300) with only two events left on the schedule.

Players earn points for finishing in the top seven at WPT events, with seventh taking 200 points and first a cool 1,000.

"I'm well aware of [the standings] and getting a fourth-place or higher [finish] will put me in the lead," Little told PokerListings.com. "Hopefully I can make it happen. Winning Player of the Year back to back would be huge."

Little's 1,000 points, ironically, came with his win at Foxwoods' World Poker Finals this past November, a victory that earned the Pensacola, Fla. native a cash reward of $1,120,310.

It was another strong showing for Little, who with two WPT titles and nearly $4 million in career earnings, has cemented his reputation as one of the hottest young talents on the Tour.

"I'm very, very excited about this one," Little said in an interview with PokerListings following the win. "I wasn't really excited about the Mirage one [his first WPT victory], for some reason."

"I mean, I was excited, but this one confirms that I can actually do it again and it's not just a huge luckfest."

Full Tilt's Erik Seidel is actually the Foxwoods Poker Classic returning champ, but it's Little who returns to Connecticut this week with a chance to make history. And he likes his spot.

"Foxwoods is a great place to play poker," Little said. "They have a giant poker room and they always take care of their players."

And the opposition?

"In general, I think the players are worse than the players in Vegas," he said, before suggesting the same is true for every other casino in the world.

"I do think the players [at Foxwoods] are a little more stubborn than normal."

The main event at Foxwoods begins Friday, with the first and only Day 1 getting under way at noon Eastern Time.

Action will continue over the weekend and into next week, with the final table playing out on Wednesday, April 8.

For his part, Little remains realistic about his shot at double POY honors.

"I'm probably one in 50 to take the top four in Foxwoods and one in 100 to take the top five at Bellagio, so I'm probably around 3% to repeat," he said.

Tune in to the PokerListings Live Tournament section all week for a glimpse of FieryJustice in action.

Gus Hansen not safe from Urindanger

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
A great deal of the Dang brothers' poker profits have come from Hansen, but that never stops him from taking them on again.

Last night it was Di "Urindanger" Dang's turn to match up with the Full Tilt pro, and the chips were flying.

As usual, the game was $500/$1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha and the location was the Hansen Hangout table on Full Tilt Poker.

Hansen actually won the biggest hand of the night when he turned a straight against Di to drag a $115,197 pot, but the younger Dang quickly responded with a few $100k pot wins of his own.

In the sickest hand of the night, Hansen actually had Di drawing to just one out after they got it all-in on the turn.

Hansen held trip threes while the best Di could offer was two aces. Hansen held a third ace in his hand, meaning only the Ac could save Di.

That's just what came on the river and Dang happily raked another $100k pot.

Check below for both of the Di vs. Gus hands in the PokerListings hand replayer:

Soooo sick!

Pilgrim lands 2009 WSOP Main Event seat

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
The 26-year-old former loans officer booked his ticket to Las Vegas with a win in the WSOP Circuit event at Harrah's Rincon Casino and Resort near San Diego Tuesday, earning him a seat in the 2009 WSOP Main Event and a $125,775 payday.

But the Rincon ring is just the latest success story for the Guyana-born Pilgrim.

He has quickly emerged as the hottest player on the WSOP Circuit this season after cashing five times at WSOPC Atlantic City this past December and booking an $83,955 win at a prelim there in early March.

"Now look out," Pilgrim said. "I'm shooting for the gold bracelet."

Pilgrim, who has only been playing live tournaments for a little more than a year, beat well-known Las Vegas-based pro Esther "E-Tay" Taylor heads-up to book the win in California, stopping her bid to become the first female WSOP Circuit main event winner in history.

Jennifer Harman finished second in the 2005 WSOPC event at the Rio in Las Vegas, and Kathy Liebert took third at Rincon in 2007.

WSOP Media Director Nolan Dalla claims Pilgrim is a burgeoning poker star, blessed with "personality, likability, and great poker talent," and has great expectations for him at the WSOP this summer.

"To know me is to love me," Pilgrim joked.

The WSOP Circuit will hit Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from April 11-29 and Harrah's New Orleans from May 8-20 before the 2009 WSOP starts at the Rio May 27.

South Carolina Holds Hearings on Legalizing Poker

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

Senate Bill 535 is making waves in South Carolina. Fresh off the trial of five poker players in Mount Pleasant in which the defendants were found guilty due to a lack of direction by South Carolina state law, S 535 would legalize “social gambling.”

In addition, during tough economic times, S 535 would pave the way for the introduction of “casino night events conducted as a fundraising activity of limited duration by a non-profit organization.” The bill specifically legalizes home games provided that no rake is taken. S 535 reads, “Gambling in a private home where no house player, house bank, or house odds exist and where there is no house income from the operation of the game is social gambling and is” acceptable should it be passed.

State Senator Glenn McConnell (R-Charleston) is the brains behind S 535, which was introduced on March 5th and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. According to the Post and Courier newspaper, bills that are introduced in South Carolina carry a life span of two years, “which means that if the bill does not pass by the end of the 2009 session in late May or early June, there's always time in 2010, which is an election year.”

A public hearing on S 535 was held on Monday in Greenville. A separate bill introduced by McConnell, S 560, was also discussed. That bill, although not related to poker, would legalize certain forms of raffles for churches and other non-profits. According to the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the main lobbying organization for the poker industry, about 150 people showed up for Monday's hearing, with the audience split evenly between opponents and advocates of the bills. Among those calling for their passage were the American Legion and former Appeals Court Judge Billy Wilkins, who spoke on behalf of the PPA. On the other side of the aisle were parties such as the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA, told Poker News Daily that about 40 of its members were in attendance supporting the bill. He explained, “The folks from our side represented a variety of people from lawyers to Average Joes.” In addition to legalizing traditional poker home games with no rake, S 535 also allows dice games, billiards, backgammon, and chess where no betting takes place and no cash or other prizes are awarded to its winners. The law in question was passed in the early 19th Century.

At a hearing in front of a South Carolina Senate panel, Bob Chimento, one of the players arrested as part of the Mount Pleasant poker case, recalled the scene when his home game was abruptly broken up in 2006: “Guns were drawn and pointed at us. They weren't pointed at the ground; they were pointed at us over a $100 fine. Someone could have been seriously injured that night or someone could have been killed.” Chimento was among five defendants (along with Jeremy Bristel, Michael Williamson, Scott Richards, and John Willis) who were found guilty in February of illegal gambling. The poker players were allegedly playing in a benign home game and, if S 535 had been on the books, they would be in no hot water legally.

Although Judge Larry Duffy found overwhelming evidence that poker was a game of skill, he deferred to an appellate court to determine whether the “Dominant Test” should apply. In other words, under current state law, it is unclear whether a game dominated by skill is legal in South Carolina. The game took place in Nathaniel Stallings' home in Mount Pleasant in April of 2006. The PPA sent World Poker Tour Host Mike Sexton to testify that poker was a game of skill using video evidence from past tournaments. Dr. Robert Hannum, a statistics professor at the University of Denver, presented results from a recent study showing that out of 103 million hands of Texas Hold'em on PokerStars, three-quarters did not go to showdown. Instead, they were won by the betting of players. Of the 24.3% of hands that went to showdown, the player holding the best hand won just 50.3% of the time. In the other 49.7% of cases, the player who had the best hand folded by the time the cards were flipped over.

Stay tuned to Poker News Daily for the latest legislative news from South Carolina and around the world.

Luke “__FullFlush1__” Schwartz: “I’m done trash talking - time for OMGweBROKE.”

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in HighStakesNews.com

The 25-year old Brit has been playing poker only for the past four years, but he has already catapulted to the biggest online games! Self-proclaimed “the best player in the world” Londoner Luke Schwartz has caused havoc at the tables both because of his skills and his spewing on the chat.

Mysterious __FullFlush1__ looks, well, mysterious.

Schwartz built his bankroll at Betfair Poker, but people knew much about him until he joined the games at Full Tilt Poker. In 2009 Schwartz turned his attention to Full Tilt Poker and deposisited $10k and ran that to over million dollars quickly.

That is an exceptional rise, but what is the most exceptional aspect of Schwartz is his complete disregard for other players. His endless trash-talking is something that has made him legendary.

Schwartz is not afraid to play heads-up against anybody in the world, even Tom “durrrr” Dwan. Actually, he don’t give much credit for Dwans abilities:

“I do have a huge heads-up No-Limit edge on every player on this planet,” he said. “[Dwan] has run like god the last few sessions and I’m beating him for like $500,000 so far.”

Other players who he doesn’t care much are Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond, Di “Urindanger” Dang and Hac “Trex313″ Dang or like he has labeled the whole group with dwan included, “OMGweNerds”.

“The Dangs are quite weak,” he said. “They ***hunt Gus [Hansen] and Guy [Laliberte] and that’s in mixed. Their No-Limit heads-up game is weak.”

Ok, there is some players who Schwartz think are quite skilled, Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro being one of them. Schwartz also likes player called INTERNET POKERS. But one thing is for sure, he don’t like players like Dangs and Galfond:

“I’d like to send a lot of nits broke all over the world,” he said. “I’m done trash-talking - time for OMGweBROKE.”

888 Operating Income Grows 21% in 2008

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in pokerNewsDaily.com

In its 2008 end of year results released this week, 888, the parent company of Pacific Poker, revealed that its operating income grew by 21% last year to $262.5 million. In 2007, it reported operating income of $216.9 million.

888's casino arm saw its revenue balloon by 14% to $135.1 million in 2008, up from $118.1 in 2007. However, Pacific Poker's revenues dropped by 4% from $80.8 million in 2007 to $77.2 million last year. All told, 888 posted a profit before tax of $48.6 million during the 2008 calendar year, up 6% from 2007. This resulted in a final dividend of 2.9 cents per share.

Operational highlights for the brand in 2008 included 14 new business customers, including an arrangement with Sportech PLC, which was forged back in June. The addition of two new Bingo customers brought its total stable to nine and, on the same day as its earnings were released, 888 announced a partnership with the Racing Post, which it describes as “the pre-eminent horse-racing industry publication.” Also during 2008, the company launched 888sport.com and 888ladies.com.

888's Chief Executive Officer, Gigi Levy, commented in the company's earnings release, “We believe that this successful model, offering both B2B and B2C businesses, is key to growth in the online gaming market in the coming years. Despite the difficult economic circumstances during the last few months of 2008, our underlying business remained strong.” The company warned that its first quarter revenues in 2009 will likely be lower than its fourth quarter revenues in 2008, reflecting the downswing in the global economy.

In 2008, Pacific Poker became available in 11 languages: Russian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Romanian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Greek, and Japanese. The report by 888 also revealed that Pacific Poker may receive a makeover in 2009: “The Pacific Poker site will be given a new look and feel, with additional products and poker side bets enhancing the customer experience of the poker room.” Pacific Poker, like other online poker sites owned by publicly traded companies, does not accept customers from the United States. The decision came after the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006.

The number of active customers on Pacific Poker sank from 170,988 during the first quarter of 2008 to just 158,557 during the fourth quarter. Consequently, its average revenue per customer fell from $128 to $107. On its lackluster close to the 2008 calendar year, 888 officials explained, “Due to the prolonged and deepening economic downturn, unprecedented challenging trading conditions were experienced following the end of the summer holiday season. Active customers played slightly less and volatile adverse foreign exchange movements exacerbated the effect on US$ denominated revenues.”

Nearly a quarter of a million new players deposited for the first time on 888's poker or casino platforms last year. It inked poker agreements with Poker Dome, Littlewoods, and Lucky Ace in 2008, further growing its presence in the marketplace. Similar to other internet gambling sites that do not accept U.S. players, 888 is keeping close tabs on the developments between the European Commission and World Trade Organization. Last week, the Commission's preliminary findings revealed the U.S. is in violation of its trade obligations due to its stance on internet gambling. A final report is due this month.

According to traffic ranking site PokerScout.com, Pacific Poker boasts the 13th busiest network worldwide in terms of cash game volume with a seven day running average of 1,100 players. Its 24 hour peak is nearly double that number, 2,174. At the time of writing, which is late afternoon throughout Europe, nearly 1,400 ring game players are seated at its virtual felts.

Gus Hansen Keeps Winning Big at FullTilt Poker

April 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerNewsBlog.net

Gus Hansen is also known as “The Great Dane” continues to climb on the list of the players who have won the most money during 2009. Last weekend he took on players like “durrrr” and “Ziigmund” at the high stakes cash game tables at Full Tilt Poker and it would prove impossible to win any of the bigger pots of the session against Gus Hansen.

When it was all said and done Gus left the table with a profit of over $1 Million and in total he has made a profit of over $4 Million during 2009.

At the same time as Gus is on a real hot streak Tom Dwan has hit a real cold streak and he is down over $3 Million for the year. He is also down in the poker challenge against Patrick Antonius where he will lose another $1.5 Million unless he manages to turn this bad streak around soon.

FullFlush1 spews: The Luke Schwartz interview

March 31st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
That's what railbirds and nosebleed players alike have been asking themselves as __FullFlush1__ leapfrogged his way to the top of the No-Limit Hold'em charts over the past couple months.

The trash-talking __FullFlush1__ has already tallied big wins against Tom "durrrr" Dwan, David "Raptor" Benefield and Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond while playing at the highest stakes available online.

It turns out the man behind the myth is Londoner Luke Schwartz.

Although he's only been playing poker for the past four years, Schwartz built his bankroll and reputation by dominating the cash games on Betfair Poker.

"When I started I was just a donk, but I somehow managed to beat the fish," Schwartz told PokerListings.com. "I went broke a couple times, but I had a couple MTT wins to get me back in."

Since then Schwartz has primarily played cash games, and he's been incredibly successful at it.

Starting in 2009, Schwartz turned his attention to the ultra high-stakes games on Full Tilt Poker. He deposited just $10,000 at first, but has since run that up past $1 million.

The 25-year-old Brit immediately started getting noticed for his complete disregard for some of the most elite online players.

In a recent interview with BBC radio, Schwartz mentioned he had no fear when playing the best players. He's also been known to trash-talk whomever he's playing.

"Some of these spazzes on the Full Tilt rail seem to hate me since I've been making their gods all look like fish," said Schwartz. "It's [funny]."

Although he wouldn't talk about any specific strategies he uses against the top-tier players, Schwartz says he is confident he can win against anyone, even the vaunted Dwan.

"I do have a huge heads-up No-Limit edge on every player on this planet," he said. "[Dwan] has run like god the last few sessions and I'm beating him for like $500,000 so far."

While beating some of the best players online, Schwartz has continued to unleash a barrage of insults against them, including referring to Dwan as "durrrr-balls" and the rest of his crew as "OMGweNerds."

When asked where he comes up with this stuff, Schwartz responded simply, "It comes naturally when the truth stares me in the face."

Never one to shy away from controversy, Schwartz has already said he'd like to take on the $1.5 million, 50,000 hand durrrr Challenge, and pretty much anyone is a fair target.

"The Dangs [Di "Urindanger" Dang and Hac "Trex313" Dang] are quite weak," he said. "They ***hunt Gus [Hansen] and Guy [Laliberte] and that's in mixed. Their No-Limit heads-up game is weak."

One might begin to think that Schwartz has no respect for any other poker players at all, but he did mention there are a number who are very skilled. Sami "LarsLuzak" Kelopuro was one, and he said he likes INTERNET POKERS' game as well.

"Some of the $50/$100 players I think are much better than the OMGweNerds crew and company," Schwartz said.

He was even able to dig up at least one compliment for Dwan, albeit a slightly backhanded one.

"I respect durrrr's stamina and willingness to gamble, even though he's still a nonce-cake," he said.

Schwartz's live tournament results to date amount to under $35k in cashes, and when asked what he would like to accomplish in poker over the next couple years he mentioned he had some interest in winning a major tournament.

A frequent player on the PokerStars European Poker Tour, he also said he hoped to see a few other Brits find the same success he has.

But more than anything, he said he wants to keep dominating the nosebleed cash games online.

"I'd like to send a lot of nits broke all over the world," he said. "I'm done trash-talking - time for OMGweBROKE."

Dwan destroys opponents for over $700k

March 31st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in PokerListings.com
The New Jersey poker prodigy spent his time on a table that included the likes of Brian Townsend, SirWatts, Chau Giang, OMGClayAiken and ahtata as well as playing some heads-up against Luke "__FullFlush1__" Schwartz.

Dwan, who was perhaps inspired by watching some of his solid play on High Stakes Poker on Sunday, absolutely wrecked the full table, scooping countless $100k pots.

Dwan's biggest hand came against Chau Giang and SirWatts.

Incredibly, all three players shoved preflop in the draw-heavy game that is PLO. Dwan hit a straight and that was enough to rake a $143,074 pot.

The heads-up match against __FullFlush1__ wasn't quite as inspiring, as durrrr hit a lucky river card in a $71,190 hand and Schwartz decided that was enough.

By the end of the night Dwan had won close to $700,000. Dwan has been playing well lately and while he was rumored to be down close to $4 million at one point, he's now much closer to being down around $2 million.

Although Dwan was the story of the night, it's also worth noting that Brian "sbrugby" Townsend (whom many would call the original durrrr) continues to have a renaissance of sorts.

Townsend won the biggest pot of the night worth $205,200 against durrrr and ahtata. Townsend hit the nut flush on the river of the hotly contested hand to scoop the pot.

Keep checking MarketPulse for all the high-stakes action or download the Full Tilt client and rail the action yourself.
