Brits to Watch at The WSOP
May 4th, 2011
Many poker journalists dubbed 2010 as the “Year of the Brit” after British players had some amazing results at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, Nevada. British players hauled in a total of five WSOP bracelets; Praz Bansi won his second bracelet, whilst James Dempsey, Richard Ashby, Mike Ellis and Steve Jelinek all got their hands on their first pieces of poker jewellery.
I honestly believe that the WSOP 2011 will see the best results from British players in the history of the series because we have some extremely talented individuals, some of whom are in exceptional form. One prime example of this is Sam Trickett, a 24-year old who turned to poker when his football career was cut short by a serious knee injury. He burst onto the live poker scene in 2008 when he came fourth in the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em event for a cool $245,927 and he almost won his first bracelet in the same event the following year, losing to Jason DeWitt heads-up for a then career best of $505,725. So far in 2011 he has been in the form of his life and has already won almost $3,000,000 and is a great bet to win his first bracelet in Vegas this summer.
One player who has admitted he will be playing a ton of events at the upcoming WSOP is Jake Cody, simply because he could become a Triple Crown winner. In January 2010 he won EPT Deauville and he followed that up with an outright victory in the WPT London Main Event, meaning he only needs a WSOP gong to complete the triple. If Lady Luck shines on him in Las Vegas he could become the second Brit, after Roland de Wolfe, to win all three titles. Whether he buys into any of the events he’s planning on playing using his Paypal poker account remains to be seen though.
Another player who is also on course to win a Triple Crown is Welshman Roberto Romanello, a man in the form of his life. Although he had some pretty impressive results in televised poker tournaments, he had yet to win a major land-based title. He changed that fact back in December 2010 when he took down EPT Prague for a career best score of €640,000. He said in the many interviews that followed that he was completely in the zone and that he was playing the best poker of his life and that he knew another title was just around the corner. And he was correct as at the end of March 2011 he won WPT Bratislava a result that has pushed his earning in the past six months to almost $1,500,000!

The Americans are in a slump after the Black Friday incident. Didn’t Phil Ivey boycott this year’s WSOP for the same reason? I wonder how much was in his account when the US Feds pulled the plug on FTP and the other big poker sites?
