Fixed Limit Hold’em, Less Popular But Still Worth It ?

May 19th, 2011

No Limit Texas HoldemFor many people their route into the world of poker is being introduced to fixed limit Texas Hold’em, a game that is still popular in many parts of the world and in online poker circles, but also a game that has lost some ground on its No Limit cousin due to the latter being seen as the more exciting and profitable of the two forms.

The popularity of all fixed limit betting structured games, not just Hold’em, have suffered in recent years as television companies and online poker sites prefer to promote huge bets and extravagant bluffs to make their games look exciting, two elements that are rare and impossible in fixed limit Hold’em. That said there are still going to be four fixed limit Hold’em event at WSOP 2011 and they actually represent the best chance for a poker player to get their hands on a coveted World Series of Poker bracelet.

The main reason for this is the drastically reduced field sizes that are usually the case in fixed limit events. For example, Event #12 of the 2010 World Series of Poker was the $1,500 Limit Hold’em event and it attracted 625 runners, which seems like a hefty number but when you compare it to Event #11, which was a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event that had 2,563 entrants it seems like hardly anything.

Some may argue that Hold’em with a fixed limit structure is not as profitable or as exciting as so-called “big bet” variants but try telling that to the likes of Jennifer Harman and Matt Hawrilenko, two of the players who are widely regarded as the best fixed limit Hold’em players to have ever played the game and two players who have quite literally made millions from Limit Hold’em. Whilst it may not be as thrilling as some games due to the lack of bluffs, betting constraints and the fact that the average fixed limit Hold’em WSOP poker tournament pays out less money, limit Hold’em is still one of the most profitable, and exciting games to play.

Definitely still worth playing. Perhaps what hinders it to be as successful as its no-limit cousin is the thrill big bets give, but other than that, they’re just about the same. Fixed limit is preferred by people who play safe and aren’t as risky as other poker players.

I always choose NL holdem but some of my friends really like the fixed limit one. I will also try it soon.

Fixed limit is good for poker beginners because of the betting limit. This allows new players to maximize their bank roll the longest possible rounds. You don’t have to be pushed out too early in the game because you’re chasing raises and making mistakes. The longer plays is good for learning the game through longer exposure in playing.

Many times fixed limit holdem can drag on for too long it gets boring. Perhaps one of the reason why more people prefer no limit because it is fast and more exciting. But I agree, this is good for new poker players.

I missed Fixed Limit. That is what I used to play a lot when I was still learning poker some several years back. Now it’s I play only NL most of the time even when just playing with buddies on a week night.
